Touching moment that high school wrestler lost state title – and first person he hugged was his opponent’s father who has terminal cancer

A high school wrestler who lost the state wrestling championship won over the crowd, when instead of getting upset he hugged his opponent's father, who has terminal cancer.

Blaine High School sophomore Malik Stewart from Minnesota lost the 120-pound title match in the Class 3A wrestling tournament to opponent Mitchell McKee, when McKee pinned him in the final face-off match.

McKee said: 'It was a big match for him and to be able to hug my dad like that and not be mad and storm off like a lot of kids do. It was really respectful.'

McKee, a St. Michael Albertville High School sophomore said that he wanted to win the tournament for his father Steve, who is dying from cancer.

He said: 'I prayed 'God help me win this match' so I can go win a state title for my dad.'

Stewart, who lost his own father to a heart attack when he was 7, said he was 'just doing the right thing.'

I just read this on Breitbart - glad you posted it as we need reminders every now and again that there are some young people out there who are real class acts!

What a nice kid. Wrestlers are amongst the nicest, hardest working, and disciplined young men and women I have ever met. As a professional sports photographer, I’ve seen a ton of of NCAA grapplers. They grow into fine men and women.

Good for them.

Wrestlers yes and swimmers also. They are among the most physically demanding sports and they are not what you would choose if you are all about getting the glory.

Basketball prima donnas would be the exact opposite. They can seek the hero worship without putting in the effort.

Wrestlers just quietly grind out and get it done and don’t expect any fanfare.

Indeed. Can’t wait for the NCAA’s and my last chance to watch 3.9 GPA finance major “Magic Man” wrestle. Just wish they’d start calling stalling.

Prima donnas are prima donnas no matter what sport they play, and plenty of basketball players across the country are as humble as any wrestlers. Comparing all basketball players to the likes of Dennis Rodman is like comparing all wrestlers to Gorgeous George.

I liked the swimmers. They were always friendly on the sides of the pools. I loved the divers. Especially the higher platform divers. The things they can do while hurling themselves off a cliff, it’s breathtaking.

Them men are all ripped, and the women divers are usually long and lean. Some of the most beautiful human forms I’ve ever photographed. When you get a good indoor swimming or diving photo, it is a thing to behold.

The problem with a great wrestling shot is that someone is usually getting their butt kicked. You can only sell it once!
