Telmarketing phonecalls on cell phone

Okay, so we have our phone listed on the Do Not Call list including the cell phone. My husbands cell phone keeps getting a call from a number we don't recognize so we don't answer it. After several calls tonight I do a reverse look-up. Sure enough this phone is from NYC and has numerous comlaints listed again it as telmarketing. I have had the phone nuxt to me for about 1 1/2 hours. This person has now called this phone 9 times. At what point does this constitute harrasment?

It's actually quite simple and I've been doing this for over a decade now. I answer the phone and immediately interrupt their spiel and tell them I don't want to be called anymore and I would like my name removed from their calling list. That's all you have to do. I very rarely ever get a telemarketing call...maybe one a year or every two years. Ignoring the problem will not make it go away. Threatening them with a law suit will not work because they know you are bluffing. Telemarketers work off of what's known as a “sucker list”. So, never, ever buy anything from a telemarketer that is cold calling you and always ask them to not call you back and to remove your name from their calling list. Pretty soon they pretty much won't bother with you.

I used to get phone calls where the caller ID said “California”. I looked up the number and there were many complaints about it. Apparently it was from some studio in CA. One night that number called again. I let it ring then redialed it. An elderly voice answered. Turns out she was dialing her son’s phone number and hit the wrong button.

A few years back a number kept on calling. Finally I picked up, it was a woman calling her daughter. I explained to her the mistake. Problem is, she always kept on miss dialing to the point of being annoying. One day I picked up the phone and before she could say anything, I told her to be patient, her husband just left and will be home in five minutes. She never called again.

Moral of the story is, you just never know who is calling. It’s not always a telemarketer.

I gathered that. I'm on the state do not call list, the federal DNC list. My home and cell phone are on it, yet I still get plagued.

If you google the numbers they originate from REALLY obscure locations like rural North Dakota, or high desert California.

These people are snakes.

I've given up trying to get them to leave me alone.

Screaming, preaching, etc. doesn't work.

The only advice I can give is do NOT answer the phone. Ever.

Because it is usually a robocaller, and once they know they have a live one, they'll call back, with a real "salesperson".

Mmm. Not helpful in the short run I suppose, but just FYI there is already software out there that lets telemarketers spoof pretty much any number they wish to your Caller ID.

Yes it works. Me Nana called. I was stunned, to say the least, since she passed on going on eight years now. Dreading the worst, I picked up the call -but it was some bloody hindi-type with a truly dreadful accent that responded!

Play it My way: simply ignore it. Sooner or later they will eventually make a note that the number is completely "Non-Responsive" and leave off.

Yes. Unless you KNOW the person, don't answer.

According to the "law" (cough) a telemarketer needs to reveal their ID number when they call.

When I see "Unknown number" or 000-000-0000 incoming, I just ignore.

No good can come out of answering.

O/T, but I've always wanted to meet an actual person who has bought something from a telemarketer.

Their IQ must be staggeringly low.

Or the person must be severely demented.

Either way, pathetic and sad.

Our phone allows you to block numbers, but it is filled and can’t add anymore. Panasonic remotes.

Best I’ve ever heard? Answer like this - takes time, but gets them:

“This is sargeant Matthews with the (name your locality) Police Dept. We are at a crime scene where a person has just been murdered and we are conducting an investigation. By law you have to answer any and all of my questions immediately.

First, I need your full name, social security number, and the reason you are calling this number. .....(wait for answer). I also need your home phone number and personal address. Now, I need the company name, address, and phone number of the company you are working for. Any incorrect answers to my questions can result in your imprisonment for committing pergury.... (and so on - keep them on the phone for as long as you want....)”

I did it once and it was a blast. The person on the other end was scared to death - and probably quit their job that day.......I guess that was mean of me.........

That is bloody hysterical! I really need to write that down and play a prank on several telemarketing 0-Bung'oles that simply will not stop calling!

Years ago the credit card people would be making the calls trying to get business. My brother, with some spare time, answered.

“A free credit card! That’s great. Except I already have two that I am over on. Can I still get yours?”

“I can!? Cool. ‘Cuz I was looking at getting a new T.V. set. Can I buy a T.V. with it?”

“I can!? Great. Now I won’t be able to pay it back right away. What is the minimum payment?”

After some-such he laid into the person saying they were terrible, only leading such a person (and there are MANY) further and further into debt. And that they should be ashamed of themselves, etc. Really ranting on the poor sod on the other end of the line.

That is good, kind of turning the tables on them, they want to tell you the good news about their product, but you need to tell them about the good news of Jesus Christ - I could see how that would work. And hey, there’s no harm in it.

I use Comcast for voice and internet (the only one available to me)

The phone number I cited may be only for Comcast users

Tom Mabe does that. He's a DJ that turns on his recorder for telemarketers. LOL There's a real gem with a telemarketer calling him and he acts like a homicide detective and tells the telemarketer he has just called a crime scene.

Personally I use an enraged Arabic type of voice when I know it's a telemarketer. I start saying "you givie me free stuff you givie me free stuff?" then I start talking much faster in gibberish and more and more excited. Usually in under 20 seconds they hang up and don't call back. LOL.

I have noticed one thing. If you place your number on the Do Not Call List about every six months the calls drastically fall off. Most telemarketing calls are Robocalls. A machine calls making an announcement or the machine connects you to a sales rep you didn't ask to be connected to.

My ID wasn’t stolen but there is a woman out there who uses my phone number to get loans and credit cards. Joanne Webbley is a frequent name I hear when bill collectors call. I’ve had my number for 6 years now and I still get calls for her.
My answering message says my name but they still leave a message looking for her.
I rag on them and ask why in the world would they give out a loan and not verify an address or phone number. Then they hang up.
