Political correctness seems to have intruded into the Houston Independent School District concerning the use of now unacceptable mascots for school sports teams. It reflects the kerfuffle surrounding the Washington Redskins.
A preliminary ruling by the Houston Independent School District's board will require at least three Houston area high schools with mascots with a relationship to Native Americans and Native American history to change them. That will mean that the Lamar High School Redskins will have to find themselves another name. The new policy, if it is passed on the second reading as many expect, may also mean that the Westbury High School Rebels will have to find another name as well, because it has unfortunate connotations to the Confederacy. Of course history is replete with rebels who were not in favor of slavery, such as those in Ireland.

I was almost written up for an “offensive” conversation on concealed carry I had at work with a machinist who made his own guns. It was in the lunchroom at lunchtime and it was overheard by the HR manager who was “offended.” I was warned by my boss, the VP, not to talk about guns at work as it was “offensive” to some people.
If being “offended” is the criteria, God help us all.

I would have asked for a list of all the offensive words and phrases not allowed to “better understand” what is allowed and not allowed.
They better be careful. After all, you may be offended but someone’s conversation. Who decides what is acceptable? That could get quite interesting.
If you can prove that “the rules” are inconsistent and basically the whim of of whatever the HR dept. decides is permissible at any given moment, that’s no grounds to build a policy. You might even have a legal case against them.

We had to sign a (as I recall) 10 page “ethics” statement. For example, we could not, under any circumstances, tell a joke. (I asked why and the HR lady said in a horrified voice, “you have no idea who you might offend.”) If you read it carefully, you were only allowed to talk about work related topics. I pointed out I was at lunch and the VP said he’d used that argument, but being offensive is being offensive. At my level, Program Manager of a $54 million dollar project, they really didn’t do write-ups. And, if they didn’t write me up they couldn’t write up the machinist. The VP asked me to make his life easier by not antagonizing the PC monitor (HR) and he was serious as they reported up a different political chain and could cause him grief. He was really embarrassed about the whole thing. incidentally, it was the most sterile uninviting environment I’d ever experienced. I described it to a Russian friend and he said he’d had more freedom in the old Sovient Union than we had in our corporate lives.

Thy actually had a VP who got to decide. I don’t remember her title, but it was her call. She knew offense when she heard it. She was the one who told me that she would hire an ex-con over somebody with a clean record because, “they needed a break.” Logic made her angry. (I figured she was pulling down around $200k. Nice work if you can find it.)
I recently read where the father in Duck Dynasty was asked to refrain from thanking Jesus at dinnertime as it might offend muslims.
Why are the muslims with their crappy shows allowed to talk about their ‘god’? I find them extremely offensive.

I have friends in the corporate world and the PC horror stores they tell. One of the best answers I heard was when an HR person questioned someone about a remark she answered “Well if I told you it wouldn’t be PC so I can’t” .....
Tell them "Oh, I'm ever so sorry my conversation offended you. So, apparently it is company policy to put a halt to anything that anyone finds offensive in the workplace? Great. You're fascist anti-free speech rules are offensive to me. I expect they'll be halted immediately, correct? After all, you're not discriminating against me, are you?"
I'd want to file an eavesdropping grievance. What gives someone the right to listen in and object to the content of a private conversation which is not directed at them, and which isn't loud to the point of unwanted public announcement?

There was a written policy that said something along the lines of: “If a statement is overheard by an uninvolved party and that third party views it as discriminatory or offensive, then, by definition, it is.”
Jeez. I don’t know about the rest of your company’s personnel manual, but that’s flat out ridiculous.

ridiculous is standard PC. Think of all the little boys expelled for kissing a girl (harassment) or firing a finger gun or a pretend bow and arrow. Wherever liberals are in charge, life tends to get ridiculous.

i was the senior graphics guy and we were having a project meeting with a new female manager (who didn’t last long). i am a former tanker and one of the editors, a friend and retired air force, made a comment about something i did in a joking way. i responded with a smile and a very slow finger (not the abrupt SCREW YOU, the slower more like BITE ME). she was horrified but everyone else at the table, male and female, just smiled or chuckled. i don’t think it went anywhere as the owner of this 50 person company was a vietnam vet and we had a bunch of former military working there.
