We've had a couple of dustings and a couple less than an inch, but last night we got 3-4 inches. It warmed up to 18 this morning, but we will be blow zero tonight.

What is really nice in CA, if we want snow, we just drive for an hour or so up to it...But we tend to go up to the mountain hideout when the weather is a bit more pleasant and warmer.

How do the birds stay warm? We have mountain chickadees and they fly to the feeder when it is 11 below. It blows me away.
I have a beautiful hawk - creamy pearl/gold with spots - who is so funny, he’s never learned to land. Cracks me up, he comes in, lands on a weak cedar branch and flaps nearly all the way to the ground trying to get purchase. He just can’t seem to figure it out.
In central Arizona today’s so chilly you can run your car’s air conditioner on low.
Trying to stay warm down here in Fort Worth is going to be somewhat of a problem. Right now we have hit a high of 19 after an overnight low of 12. There is at least 4 inches of ice on all the streets I can see from my window.
This is my first storm down here so like a dutiful northerner I went out and shoveled a path for the mailman. Actually I was afraid they wouldn’t deliver my packages from Amazon so purely selfish on my part.
Hopefully tomorrow it will be above freezing and start the melting process. Fingers crossed.

I work in Eastern Washington and in the panhandle of Idaho. I love Kootenai (Coeur d’Alene) and Bonner (Sandpoint) Counties. Beautiful lakes, beautiful mountains, and country living with plenty of outdoor stuff to do. Winters can feel a bit long at times, but there is usually plenty of sun filled days.
People are usually friendly, taxes are low, cost of living is not bad. Homes on acreage are plentiful and private if you take your time to shop. Some areas can be a bit trashy, but it’s live and let live. One trend to be mindful of is the relocation of Kalifornians - it has given both places a bit of an artsy-fartsy air with better restaurants, but there is always a political shift with the migration years down the road.
State government is fiscally responsible and not intrusive. The Forest Service owns most of the land in the panhandle, but these areas provide good buffers if you buy near them.
Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene are the places to visit and Priest Lake is the place to vacation in my opinion. Northwest Montana is very nice too (Kalispel/Libby).
Yeah, freezing cold and snow is fun...

The birds stay warm just like our chickens. They grow in their winter feathers and seem to do just fine although I suspect a few weeks in a row like this one with temperatures would take a toll on them.

To be honest, I do enjoy the snow, but only went the temps gets up to about 65 or 70...
Wood stove is beating back the cold.

It has that, plus much better politics than California (with the exception of the North End of Boise, and the mayor who wants light rail in downtown Boise - which is 1.5 miles long).
As an example of the lifestyle, I use my house as a base camp for deer hunting. Many units are within a 2 hour drive. You just have to get out of bed a little earlier, but it's a NICE bed.
They are fun to watch. When our pasture grass gets too tall the hawks use a form of hunting that I had never seen before. They fly low over the top of the grass and flare up a few feet to pounce. It’s quite a spectacle because it does not work too often so they make multiple attempts per catch.
I’m now in southwestern Idahohoho myself. There’s much to like here—no surprise, considering how many years I’ve been meandering through Idaho—though it’s taking me awhile to accustom myself to the more humid air.
If it's "clean, open air" you're after, I know just the spot.
When we were in the Central Idaho area last summer, we came across an information sign just north of Galena Summit at the head of the valley of the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. It stated that air quality testing had established that the air at this particular point was the cleanest air in the USA.
So, head north out of Ketchum on ID-75 toward Stanley.
I wonder if it’s possible to hand-feed/domesticate a baby hawk? This creature is gorgeous... love to have one as a pet.
I would put him at about 10 lbs.
We enjoy our life on the Snake River. We have an inch or two of snow this morning. I just drove back home from Calif. yesterday to beat this incoming front.
(By the way, Pearl Harbor was seventy-two years ago today.)
