A quintessentially American lunch item is the peanut butter & jelly sandwich. Yet, one principal has a unique perspective on this lunch staple.
Did you know that eating or even talking about a peanut butter and jelly sandwich could be considered racist?
Thats right.
Apparently, its because people in some cultures dont eat sandwich bread. Verenice Gutierrez, principal of Harvey Scott K-8 School in Portland explained in an interview with the Portland Tribune:
Take the peanut butter sandwich, a seemingly innocent example a teacher used in a lesson last school year, the Tribune said.
What about Somali or Hispanic students, who might not eat sandwiches? Gutierrez asked. Another way would be to say: Americans eat peanut butter and jelly, do you have anything like that? Let them tell you. Maybe they eat torta. Or pita.
The Tribune noted that the school started the new year with intensive staff trainings, frequent staff meetings, classroom observations and other initiatives, to help educators understand their own white privilege, in order to change their teaching practices to boost minority students performance.Last Wednesday, the first day of the school year for staff, for example, the first item of business for teachers at Scott School was to have a Courageous Conversation to examine a news article and discuss the white privilege it conveys, the Tribune added.
Gutierrez completed a week-long seminar called Coaching for Educational Equity, a program the Tribune says focuses on race and how it affects life. She also serves on an administrative committee that focuses on systematic racism.
Our focus school and our Superintendents mandate that we improve education for students of color, particularly Black and Brown boys, will provide us with many opportunities to use the protocols of Courageous Conversations in data teams, team meetings, staff meetings, and conversations amongst one another, she said in a letter to staff.
Now that youve been made aware of the evil of PB&J, theres only one question left to answer: Is white bread more racist than whole wheat?

The American public school system is the brainchild of that imbecilic communist John Dewey, who is known as the father of the American public school.
“Tick Tick Tick, the clock is getting ready to strike midnight on REV II.”
Then let’s get the show on the road, already.
The decision to send your children to good, private schools that do not countenance this kind of nonsense is one that just sells itself.
Since it takes an investment in machinery to slice bread in volume, I suspect that Mr. Gutierrez' statement about sliced bread was possibly intended to appeal to Oregon's low-information, wealth redistribution-indoctrinated voters. (I also admit that my "insight" could be totally wrong; first post today.)
Good thing I only eat FC&W sandwiches (fried chicken and watermelon).
I don’t eat zebra myself but would not mind some Somalian eating a peanut butter and zebra sandwich.
Some people are always looking to have their feathers ruffled.
btw is saying feathers being a homophone?
Oh, baloney! ;-) Peanut butter and jelly is a school lunch rorschach - one can see anything they want to see. People are seeing what their brains (or whatever) conjure up.
Is GWC not considered black enough? I always admires the guy. Honest question, BTW. I guess I don’t keep up with some of the PC rules.

This could only happen in places like Portland, San Francisco and the thousands of other liberal/progressive nut case cities of America.
Not if she is a Principal; means she is in management, she can be fired in a hart beat.
You KNOW that Winnie Mandela has to be a rotten person if she couldn’t remain married to the most perfectest man in the world of this week Mr. Nelson Mandela.
Couldn’t he have had one of those 4 wive muslim weddings?
he may have been married to all manner of people...etc.
Wow a two for one, stupid and ugly go all the way to the bone.
I’ve always greatly admired him. The respect for him by whites apparently put him in the category of “inauthentic”.
Rather than "incompetents", I would use words like left-wing commie brain-washers. We spend too much time ridiculing some of the most pointed prongs of the Left's attacks because they look so stupid that we miss the real goal - to mush the minds of our kids until they will believe and go along with anything that those "in authority" throw at them.
