If you send your child to school in Manitoba with roast beef, potatoes, carrots, an orange and some milk, you should prepare yourself for the inevitable accusations of negligence, a $10 fine and having your kids force-fed Ritz crackers to make up for your lack of parental ability.
That's right. Meat, vegetables and dairy are all fine and good. But if your kid doesn't get his or her daily intake of saturated fats and processed wheat products, you deserve a scarlet letter branded to your chest.
The health blog Weighty Matters posted recently on a Manitoba mother who received a rebuke from her child's school accusing her of sending her children to school with an "unbalanced" lunch in April 2012.
Meals that are provided to children (by either the center or parent) are required to have: 1 milk, 1 meat, 1 grain and 2 fruits/vegetable. According to licensing guidelines, the centre is required to supplement lunches that contain anything less than this," the note reads.
It adds that the lunch was supplemented with Ritz Crackers, and the parent was charged $10.

Maybe call it “Puttin’ In The Ritz.”
Hey I’m with them on this. Long live ritz ... with the right sharp cheddar spread of course! ;-)
They are ok, but I prefer club crackers, and I eat a few every day. I do not count them as a grain. They are starch and fat. Taste great with peanut butter. Still they are not what I call healthy nutritious food.
I go for knäckebröd, with either butter or pickled herring.
schools : Ritz crackers :: hospitals : aspirin tablets
Not familiar with the Knac stuff, but I’d really prefer butter over the pickled herring.LOL
Fish are good for you (and for all other Vikings).
“Lean Forward”
Heh heh. That was clever of you to think of that!
That headline cracks me up!
The ignorance is overwhelming. Saturated fat and tons of salt, just what a growing body does NOT need.
How did these awful things get on the must-have list? YOu don’t suppose for a minute, do you, that the cracker company greased palms?
Yes, I love tuna fish, shrimp, crab, and clam chowder. Sometimes catfish. The rest you can keep even if it is healthy.
It must be nice to know that the “educational system” in Canada has sack lunch inspectors.
“Ritz Crackers”? That is so impolite, so politically incorrect. They should have said, “rich white Southerners.”
