.223 and 5.56 ammo
email | 8-31-2013 | email

Anyone in the market for .223 and 5.56 ammo:

I just got an email from Natchez Shooters Supplies saying they're having a Labor Day weekend sale.

1000 round case of American Eagle .223 for $499.50
or
1000 round case of Lake City 5.56 Green Tips for $549.50

Not the greatest prices ever but there it is.
I'm not giving a link because this isn't an ad for them.
Just a heads up if anyone's interested.

Price was $700 a few days ago. Good news is that some ammo is hitting the shelves, but at high prices. Blazer 9mm at $17 a box is robbery. My local Walmart has only .40 S&W and 2 boxes of .38 Special. I’m still in shock that I can play a round of golf plus lunch for less than I/2 hour at the range.

5.56 rounds are slightly thicker than .223 rounds, but they are similar in appearance. Using the wrong ammo can damage the weapon and cause injury.

The difference you point out is valid and reasonable. 5.556 is a different round than .223.

However, I will offer from personal experience - The sumbitch hit by .223 will not know the difference from being hit by 5.556mm.

Laz...a rifle stamped to accept 5.56 will accept .223...but not the other way around.

Odd rifle powders are available, a stop at Cabellas last week revealed no primers or pistol powders.

My new Mossberg MVP takes both rounds(5.56 and .223) and any m-16 magazine.

sorted by price per round,

.223

Interesting side note, the bastids at Cheaper Than Dirt come in at 40 cents/rd. Think they miss seeing their old customer base?

5.56

I just bought 1000 rounds of Lake City (Federal) XM855 62gr 5.56 NATO green tip penetrator rounds for $460.00 with coupon and shipping. This is current 2013 US Military issue. If they are out of stock... you may be able to backorder or have them notify you when available. The notified me and I ordered it right away... had it three days later.

$.50 plus for mil spec ammo is still too much. If we let the sellers of ammo hold on to it long enough, they will find it will sell nicely at the old $.35 or so per round and not sit around. It’s obvious there is plenty of .223 and 5.56 nato around now but the retailers like CTD and Natchez are hoping to capitalize on the remnants of the hording epidemic.
I say “let them try and make sandwiches out of it.”

All my ARs have .223 Wilde chambers. Safe for .223 REM and 5.56 NATO.

Didn't go to Wal-Mart today, yet; today was the first time in years that I've seen .223 on the shelves outside the locked case in Meijer.

100% right; 5.56mm casing is slightly-thicker NATO military brass and will cause internal damage to the firearm. To tthe untrained eye, unless you have a caliper, they’re difficult to tell apart.

100% agreed on that point.

I still carry this .32cal from being robbed/shot in 1974, and it lifted me off the ground and threw me back 7-8ft. Luckily, it missed everything important internally, and only caused a 1 day stay in South Miami Hospital for 'observation'. God was truly sitting on my shoulder that night.

ordered 1000 rds from cheaper than dirt. $315 including shipping. If you buy in bulk from target sports it is free shipping. gunbot is my main source of finding ammo. you have to be fast sometimes or the ammo is out of stock.

Here is a very well researched article on .223 vs 5.56 concerning pressure and dimensions and velocities. It will correct some misconceptions in this thread.

http://www.luckygunner.com/labs/5-56-vs-223/

He summarizes each section, here is one:

Summary: The majority of the experts I consulted over the course of my research did not feel that there was a major difference between .223 and 5.56 chambers in terms of pressure.

I stopped in at the Cabelas in Dundee, Mi last week and picked up 2,000 primers for $80. They had a ton of various primers but the only powder they had was for shotguns. Picked up 150 .308 win brass for $23/50 too. I also picked up 100 Sierra .30 cal projectiles though they didn’t have the ones I really wanted, the 180 gr hpbts. It’s coming back.

The Remington .223/5.56x45 NATO Wylde chambered weapon is not as well known as I thought it would be by now. (I’m not sure why. Any Ideas on that?) Mine also safely operate and fire fine with both cartridges. (GT’s mostly.)
