I just got an email from Natchez Shooters Supplies saying they're having a Labor Day weekend sale.
1000 round case of American Eagle .223 for $499.50
or
1000 round case of Lake City 5.56 Green Tips for $549.50
Not the greatest prices ever but there it is.

If you keep your eye open at Walmarts, about every three months, they’ll get a 30 CAL ammo can of Olin Federal (Lake City XM855s) .....
420 rounds on strippers, was $175 now $199. I got two cans over a 4 month period.
As I always caution myself, .233 is not 5.56 mm, especially vice versa.

I think the jam has been kicked loose. Whether it was caused by mass buying/hoarding, or “scalping” (buying out retailers, then reselling at higher prices to those who didn’t get to the retailers quickly enough), or DHS buying up all the .22LR (even my fevered brain cannot credit that one), local stores from Cabela’s to the Pop* shop up the street seem to have examples of everything. Some quantity limits still apply.
*No evidence of Mom being involved :)
Powder still seems hard to come by unless I’m looking in the wrong places.

I was at Walmart today and saw good stock on 100 round value packs of Federal range ammo for both 40s&w & 45acp. The 40 was $0.32 a round vs $0.28 pre-Newtown. I haven’t seen either for at least six months.
This is in suburban Cook County so I don’t know how it relates to the free world.

Agree that supplies are improving. In my area (north periphery of DFW) I can find just about any caliber I want with the exception of 9mm fmj. This is still being rationed.
I got 8 lbs from pats reloading back in March, during the height of the craziness.
Back in late July the wife picked up 1,000 rds of .223 for me at Cabela's in Northern Wisconsin for $399. Picked up another 1,000 of 9mm for around $275 (I think......) so am pretty well supplied.
The good news is: Ammo's finally becoming readily available back in the market, and that's the good news. (Prices aside.)

But if I could make it out to Will County I think I'd just keep heading west on I-80 to Nebraska or Wyoming.
Since you put it that way, keep going to Wyoming. Nothing in Nebraska to see, keep moving. :-) (Been there, done that...)
Be aware: .223cal fires at 40,000psi, while 5.56mm fires at 70,000psi internal pressures.
You can fire .223 from a 5.56 rifle, but should not fire 5.56mm from a .223 rifle. Different internal pressures and fps, too.
A lot of stores mix-up the ammo to unwary customers. I have and do work PT for an FFL.
Check the rifle and see what you have. It’s not the same ammo.
Mine are all 5.56, especially the Class III units.
I always assumed AR-15 owners knew that, but I saw a few at the range while firing my Beowulf .50cal last Thursday, loading 5.56 into a .223, and had to stop and warn them.

I have heard of a rifle stamped with both calibers. Safe to use either, or should (the person who owns it) fire both rounds at the same time instead?
Really all you have to do, I think, is look at the barrel stamp on your AR. If its stamped 5.56 you’re good to go. At least my M&P 15s are like that. But is good advice to be aware of the difference.
That’s a new one to me. LOL. I’ve never seen an AR-15 KABOOM come into the FFLs in all the years I’ve worked PT, at several, but I’d imagine there’d be some costly internal damage. Don’t know what’d happen to the shooter. I would want to find out, firsthand.
It seems to be easing, no doubt. My local Walmart had a full shelf of ammunition last time I went in a couple of weeks ago, except that they had no rimfire aside from one box of crappy .22 shotshells that has been collecting dust in the same spot for about 4 years now.
