Shaniqua Davis, it’s not McDonald’s fault that you chose to become an unmarried, teenage mother

Shaniqua Davis, it’s not McDonald’s fault that you chose to become an unmarried, teenage mother

Recently, McDonald’s employees have been going on strike to try to get paid $15 an hour. Associated Press reports:

Shaniqua Davis, 20, lives in the Bronx with her boyfriend, who is unemployed, and their 1-year-old daughter. Davis has worked at a McDonald’s a few blocks from her apartment for the past three months, earning $7.25 an hour. Her schedule varies, but she never gets close to 40 hours a week. “Forty? Never. They refuse to let you get to that (many) hours.”

Her weekly paycheck is $150 or much lower. “One of my paychecks, I only got $71 on there. So I wasn’t able to do much with that. My daughter needs stuff, I need to get stuff for my apartment,” said Davis, who plans to take part in the strike Thursday.

She pays the rent with public assistance but struggles to afford food, diapers, subway and taxi fares, cable TV and other expenses with her paycheck.

“It’s really hard,” she said. “If I didn’t have public assistance to help me out, I think I would have been out on the street already with the money I make at McDonald’s.”

So, Shaniqua Davis says that it’s “really hard” to take care of a baby on what McDonald’s pays.

She’s right.

So why did she try to do such a thing in the first place?

Why did she choose to become an unmarried teenage mother?

Whatever her reasons were, it’s not McDonald’s fault.

Of course you can’t raise a family on what McDonald’s pays its cashiers. But that kind of job was never intended to be for people who are trying to raise a family. Instead, that kind of job is supposed to be for a teenager trying to get money to pay for the prom, or for a student who is working their way through college.

And what is this nonsense of having a baby out of wedlock, and then being surprised as how hard it is? Of course it’s hard. That’s why the institution of marriage has existed, in every society, all over the world, for thousands of years.

The article also says that Ms. Davis “struggles” to pay for her cable TV. This just shows how much things have changed in this country. In the past, being poor meant that you couldn’t get 2,000 calories per day, or that you didn’t have indoor plumbing, or that your roof leaked. But now, being poor means that you have difficulty paying for cable TV. My, how things have changed.

Ms. Davis and the other strikers want to get paid $15 an hour, but they don’t want to acquire the education and job skills that would justify such a salary. McDonald’s already pays some of its employees more than $15 an hour, such as its accountants, lawyers, and computer programmers. Those employees didn’t get those higher wages by going on strike. Instead, they got those higher wages by putting in the time and effort to acquire the education and job skills that justify those higher wages. Ms. Davis and the other strikers want higher wages, but they don’t want to provide anything in exchange for the extra pay.

What would happen if the government did require McDonald’s to pay all of its employees $15 an hour? One possibility is that McDonald’s would only hire people who had a college degree. If that were to be the case, Ms. Davis would end up getting paid nothing. Another possibility is that McDonald’s would replace its human workers with robots and self-serve checkouts. And again, if that were to be the case, Ms. Davis would end up getting paid nothing.

And that 20 dollar box of diapers will be 50 and that cable TV bill will go from 100 to 400...

Raising the minimum wage is not a static effect....

Take some night classes if you’re not working 40 hrs. a week.

and read up about the idiots that voted in and continue to support Obamacare.

It’s one of the reasons we are seeing an end to the 40 hour week.

My niece works 20 hours a week at Red Lobster and with tips brings home about $400 a week which helps her pay for college and car. Of course she has to be on time, keep her uniforms, hair, etc looking professional and works hard to serve the customer well, as they determine her tips.

Darden, Red Lobster's parent company, even provides P/T health insurance which they will be dropping due to Obamacare. Niece had planned to Graduate and work f/t at Red Lobster while searching for a job in her field. Because of Obamacare there won't be many F/T openings.

She also worked at Wendy's from age 16-18, and knew even then “this isn't a career”.

But, she’s been taught that agitation is the way to security, not self determination.

The intelligence just isn’t there.

I don't know about that. Only seriously developmentally disabled people are incapable of developing some level of technical skills from lack of intelligence. I have seldom met people like that. What we have here are a lot of people who consider development too much hard work, and are thus willing to park it at their present level.

IOW, I don't think it's simple stupidity. There is another dynamic at work. For example, in the black community, intellectual achievement is discouraged as "acting white" and beaten down. Physically. The problem may not be lack of intelligence but may rather be lack of knowledge, experience and wisdom.

Call me a reactionary, but for the budding hamburger Horatio Algers out there McDonalds is an oasis of opportunity in a job opportunity desert.

McDonalds is a great company to work for and it provides sharp, hard working people with a career path that can't be beat, especially if you don't have a college education, but can operate the cash register without having to look at the pictures and can actually close the register out at the end of the shift.

McDonalds is also one of the few large companies that hires and promotes from within and sincerely values the fact that many of even their high level people know what it's like to do everything from flip burgers to close out a store at night.

It is one of the few jobs left in the country where a young, unskilled person can start at the absolute bottom and rapidly advance to a very well paying, responsible job and live the American dream if they are hard working, dedicated and on the ball.

I personally know of 7 people who were either unable to attend college or who simply did not feel school was for them.

They all started out flipping burgers but rapidly advanced to being managers of one or more McDonalds and 2 actually made the jump to the corporate level. One even owns and manages his own McDonalds restaurant.

All of them make damn good money and have really nice lives.

Most recently, a friend of my sons started working at one of the local McDonalds right after graduation from High School.

She was an honor student who came from a very hard luck situation of broken home and borderline poverty. She could not afford to pay for college so she took the job at McDs to make money to pay for school.

She was very sharp, worked hard and was very dedicated to her job. within three weeks she was an assistant shift manger and was a shift manger in less than 6 months. She continued to advance and within 3 years out of high school she was overseeing several of the owners restaurants.

She recently started up at the University and McDonalds is helping put her through school and grooming her for a career in the McDonalds organization.

Try that with any other company these days - it just does not happen like that much anymore these days.

Section 8 for rent. That’s huge right there.

She has to be getting food stamps, WIC, Medicaid and other bennies easily for the kid.

How about we tally up the total worth of them with her paycheck from McDonalds per annum.

Probably in the $40K range or more.

if they do pay $15 an hour, they would fire at least half their employees.

or they would double their prices, and profit would decrease, and they’d fire a bunch of employees and we’re back to scenario one.

To hell with people like you. Go to Africa and see how much you make an hour. America doesn’t owe you one damn thing anymore.

Guess what? McDonald’s doesn’t even ‘owe’ you a job, let alone more hours OR higher pay. Take your opportunities and make the best of them, Shaniqua. Work harder than everyone else and doors will open up for you.

But of course, that’s way too difficult for people like her to understand.

People like her absolutely CANNOT understand cause and effect. Trying to explain it to them is a complete waste of time.

...and why is loverboy sitting on his butt?

I have nine grand daughters and continue to be amazed at the number of wannabe parasitic males they know.

Just a bunch of little boys looking for mommy to take care of them without having to grow up.

It's disgusting, but its part of what liberals have been pushing for, unintended consequence or not.

Underneath all this is the unions preying on the stupid, trying to suck money out of them (How'd that work with the car industry? short of robbing the bondholders at gubmint gunpoint, it wouldn't have.)

In the meantime, the kids who used to have these jobs won't be acquiring a work ethic, either, unless they have their own business.
