Chocolate Tree ''All You Can Eat": A Rookie's Tale

We were what the locals called "First Timers". "Pace yourself", they would say. What does that mean,"Pace yourself"? I would soon learn.

The veterans to this affair were obvious. They were the ones who brought bottles of water or milk. Some even had glasses of wine. Glasses of wine! Many brought their own plates or plastic bowls. I was a rookie, and it showed.

The gates opened, and the crowd that had gathered stormed the Chocolate Tree like the opening scene of "Saving Private Ryan". I grabbed a tiger paw and then English toffee. "Gator bait? What is gator bait? Oooh! Divine! That's what gator bait is!"

Every step led to a new and wonderful treat. In no time I had stuffed myself with more varieties of chocolate goodies than I knew existed only moments before. I was in chocolate heaven! That was the best seven minutes of my life!

It was at that moment that I began to hear a familiar chant in the recesses of my subconscious,"Pace yourself. Pace yourself!"

In the eighth minute of a scheduled 90 minute event, I began to faulter. One white chocolate pretzel later I began to hallucinate. I began to see cherubs circling overhead softly singing,"Pace yourself. Pace yourself".

My struggles were not lost on the grizzled veterans with their thermoses of milk. As I staggered through the shop fighting the onslaught of sugar coma, they would stare at me and shake their heads in disapproval.

In only the tenth minute I did the unthinkable. I threw in the towel. It was like the scene in Rocky IV. The towel landed, only too late to save Apollo Creed. I was done. The paramedics were able to revive my body but not my pride.

I may one day attempt to regain my honor and take on the Chocolate Tree "All You Can Eat" event a second time. I will do so older and wiser... and hauling a gallon of milk.

Had to look up what you were talking about.. $15 for two hours of gorging at a chocolate shop? Seems like some minor brilliance on the part of the shop, since few can consume over a pound of chocolate in that time, and odds are that it builds a lot of customer loyalty come Christmas.

And what a great excuse to try items you never have. Thanks for sharing.

Oh, I’ve been there. Cool place for sure. We have friends who own an awesome loft nearby. An easy walk to the Tree and all the good downtown restaurants.
