The family of an American man stranded in a South Korean hospital is asking for donations to bring him home.

Sean Jones, a young teacher from Oklahoma City, has been hospitalized since May with anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis, a rare autoimmune disease that causes swelling in the brain.

Jones' family wants him transferred to an American hospital for continued treatment, but Yonsei University Severance Hospital in Seoul reportedly refuses to release him until his bill of nearly $40,000 is paid.

Friends and family have set up a Facebook page and a Giveforward.com account to raise money for medical costs. So far they have raised about three-quarters of the goal, Sean's mother, LaTanya Dodd, told The Korea Herald.

Yep, not unusual. They won’t let anyone go until the bill is paid.

Buy travel insurance if you travel abroad.

Many foreign hospitals will not operate until you pay up front.

Hospitalization for three months (since May), only $40,000? That's cheap.

Can you imagine what that would cost in the U.S. if he were uninsured--and the American taxpayers would be stuck with the bill.

So they have raised 30,000 not bad. Perhaps they can negotiate a bit on the price?

A MBA-type hospital consultant told me that nationally in the US, typically 93 to 97 percent of uninsured billings are written off.

You’re absolutely correct.
I had surgery last year and was surprised how little the doctor got and how much the hospital got.

If he were in a US hospital, the bill would probably be $2,000,000, and they’d agree to settle for $200K.

Maybe they can give him a job to work part, or all, of it off.
