Nothing focuses the mind of a politician quite like a competitive race. In the wake of Liz Cheney's primary challenge, Wyoming Sen. Mike Enzi has now taken a hard-line on funding ObamaCare. He has joined the efforts led by Sens. Lee, Cruz and Paul to strip funding to implement the health care law out of any measure to fund the government. U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., will not support a continuing resolution that funds further implementation or enforcement of Obamacare, his office explained in a statement highlighting his support of the defunding effort.
Behold the primary challenge effect.
Enzi was not an obvious target for a primary. Unlike Sens. Alexander or Graham, Enzi has a solid conservative voting record. His only real deviation is his aggressive push to allow states to collect sales taxes on internet purchases. A conservative case allow this could perhaps be made, but not in the manner Enzi has proposed.
Cheney's chief argument against Enzi is that the quiet 69-year old lawmaker represents the "go along, get along" faction in Washington.
Im running because I believe it is necessary for a new generation of leaders to step up to the plate, Cheney said when she announced her candidacy. Im running because I know as a mother and as a patriot that we can no longer afford simply to go along to get along.
Sen. Enzi seems to have gotten the message.

And now Mike Enzi is trying to keep his seat by joining the anti-Obamacare parade.
If only he'd done that while he was ranking member of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee, we might not have to worry about it. But he was a Ted Kennedy and then a Tom Harkin buddy. Maybe if he'd exercised some influence, challenged some unanimous consent requests in committee, put pressure on Olympia Snowe to NOT vote with the democrats to get the bill to the floor, the floor fight might have been delayed till 2010, and election year. But no, he didn't.
And please don't get on me about Liz Cheney. I'm just happy Enzi's being challenged!
GOP incumbents have been getting away with this crap for far too long. A primary bloodbath is overdue.
Not sure whether or not I like Liz Cheney, but if she has forced Enzi into opposing Obamacare she isn’t all bad.
My problem is with her sister Mary, who is homosexual and is expecting a turkey baster baby.
How does Liz stand on the sanctity of marriage which no longer exists.
I’ll take a few rocks for ya and go so far as to say that I hope Liz Cheney gets elected. She’s smart, experienced, and if she was good enough for Fred Thompson, that says a lot. Her family has lived in Wyoming since the 1850s and I think her ideas will resonate with Wyoming farmers and ranchers.
Thanks! I’m tired of the “Liz Cheney is for gay marriage” crap, when I’m just trying to get democrat enablers removed from office.
until they win
Cheney is for gay marriage, and has been for a long time. She grew up and graduated High School in DC, went to college in Colorado and Chicago I think, and has worked in the establishment world in DC helping constrict out wonderful foreign policy.
She has no “Wyoming”. She does not deserve to be a senator from that state. Is there no end to the legacy children in both parties, being handed plum jobs because of their name?
her resume is filled with them and now she wants a senate seat.
This is exactly what McCain and Hillary did. Sought out states they have nearly no ties to simply to grab an elective office.
Enzi has never been in favor of Obamacare and would no doubt have supported the attempt to defund it, Cheney or no Cheney.
Cheney her self has lived in Wyoming since late 2012. I don't think Wyoming farmers and ranchers are going to be fooled by a carpetbagger.
Every politician should be primaried every election cycle that way the electorate can sift the chaff from the wheat. As for Liz Cheney I don’t think she has ever lived in Wyoming, I thought NY was the place to run if you are a carpetbagger.
>> Im tired of the Liz Cheney is for gay marriage crap
Promoting sodomy is not an insigificant thing.
Promoting homosexuality pisses the LORD off no end. And if there is ANYONE that America needs on our side, it’s the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY.
More now than ever before.
Liz Cheney? No thank you.
Screw ‘em both. I’ll save my money for races where REAL conservatives are running.
This - And Enzi thinks its okay to let AIDS be given to blood donations.
I’d sit this election out if I lived there.
I do like primary challenges too, to keep them honest. But comparing both their records, one is a local, got an MBA, served in the Wyoming ANG, has been successful in businesses, and has won election to progressively higher offices starting at the mayoral level.
The challenger Liz grew up back east, went to law school, wrote her big school paper on presidential war powers (daddy’s field) and has walked into a series of jobs based upon connections. And now she wants elected office, so she *starts off* as a US Senator.
And make no mistake, she ain’t TEA. She’s from the wing of the Party that hates Sarah and TEA.
“And Enzi thinks its okay to let AIDS be given to blood donations.”
If Enzi thinks its ok for homos to donate blood, that’s idiotic and deadly wrong. But Liz loves the sodomites just as much, so it’s probably a wash.
As for sitting it out, id still prefer to have Enzi over Cheney.
A very *few* of them, maybe...
Enzi talks a good game but he did next to nothing to halt the bill in committee. And he was always going along with Ted Kennedy on things. On worthless education bills and programs etc. And if the republicans take the senate, Enzi will be chairman and like other moderates or establishment types who’ve gotten used to the status quo, will thwart any effort to reign in the healhcare bureaucracy, the education bureacracy, or the labor unions.
Kennedy over time got all these things under one committee, which he either chaired, was ranking member, or controlled behind the scenes. I would like to see a real conservative become chaiman of that committee. And that’s not going to happen if Enzi is reeelcted.
I have always liked Liz. I think she would be a lot better for the country than a comfortable country club republican. They get soft and waaay too chummy with the other side of the aisle.
We have two card carrying RINO’s in GA. Chambliss and Isakson. We are replacing Chambliss next year with hopefully Paul Broun a hair on fire conservative. The only way to take back the Republic without a 1776 redux is to elect new blood and get rid of the old guys.
enzi should be thrown out of office because just like hatch... as soon as he is safe again... he will vote with marx and lenin.
