The Pylon Place ^ | July 30, 2013 | Marilyn Dash

With all the drama surrounding the transition from the old Unlimited Class to the new, the fans are forgetting about the other five classes of racing. I've decided to give focus this month’s column on the other classes, the innovators and racers who we don’t hear about on the forums. Who they are and what to look for this year – but let’s start with why the fans aren't as enamored with these classes, and why maybe they should be.

Air Racing through the years was always about technical advancements -- especially for civil aviation. Among the first races in the 1910’s, the draw was for inventors to show their wares and develop a name for themselves through their innovation. Thousands would flock to these events to watch the historic races and see how far aviation had changed since 1903 at Kitty Hawk.

I forgot the text for the two bottom planes

Lee Behel’s GP-5: beautiful and innovative

and

Karl Grove’s new radical Biplane design

Isn't that GP-5 a sleek looking bird?

“Isn’t that GP-5 a sleek looking bird?”

Reminds me of the P-51 Mustang.

Agreed , looks like a GEE-BEE’d P-51 in 3/4 scale ... I like the biplane better ,, especially the minimalist strut...

Even better, the top wing has forward sweep.

Very innovative ... I’ve always liked the look of dihedral but hated that it squanders lift in 2 competing directions for stability (high wing planes need very little dihedral because of the cg being below the wing) ... Is the purpose of the forward sweep to lessen the losses at the tips( sinking vortices)?

I’d love to build a 4 place Lancair or similar..

Think lift vectors and pressure distributions. My thoughts are maybe in 3D CFD the drag was a lot less with the forward sweep. It maybe about the interaction betweenboth wings.

Just a thought...

Nice article, thanks for posting.

A day at the Reno Air Races is unforgettable. I go about every other year, and I've always enjoyed every minute.

If you plan to attend, get there extra early, btw.
