Two Colorado GOP state senators line up to challenge Sen. Mark Udall

Colorado state Sen. Randy Baumgardner may have his Wild West mustache to thank for his rising visibility around the state — his facial hair even has its own Twitter handle — but the Republican hasn’t given much thought to how it will be received in Washington if gets elected to the U.S. Senate.

“I don’t care how it plays in Washington,” Baumgardner said from Washington, where he is visiting supporters in preparation for his bid to unseat Colorado Democratic Sen. Mark Udall. “I’m not representing Washington, I’m representing Colorado.”

But first Baumgardner must face off against state Sen. Owen Hill for the Republican nomination.

Whereas Baumgardner served two terms as state representative, Hill was only been elected last year. But Hill also just narrowly lost in 2010 against Democratic Sen. John Morse, the senate president who is facing recall over his support of new gun laws.

In an interview with The Daily Caller News Foundation, Baumgardner said he was inspired to run because he doesn’t feel that Udall is representing Colorado’s interests, especially in the areas of energy policy, immigration reform and the Second Amendment.

“I know it’s been said that we need ‘all of the above’ [in terms of energy sources] but the prime agenda from Washington, D.C. seems to be that renewable is the answer to everything,” he said. “But without conventional energy, the renewables just aren’t sustainable enough to meet the needs of the people of the state of Colorado. People don’t like to be mandated that they have to meet certain renewable standards which seems to be another push not only at the state level but at the federal level.”

Let's start lining up good people for these seats. Ken Buck barely lost in 2010 because of the republican nominee for governor and that mess. We can take this seat! And we can throw out his brother in New Mexico too!

Tancredo is running for Governor. He said that the State of Colorado spends $2B for welfare for illegal aliens then. This kills the budget and then the Democrats black male the state for tax increases to fund schools.

You mean that they *blackmail* the state. I don’t think that Colorado Democrats have had a “black male” in office since Wellington Webb was mayor of Denver. : )

Didn’t Webb go to Washington DC and fail? Chickenpooper doesn’t like “The People” having rights or any power and most of all the demoRats do not like “We the People” having any money.

Ken Buck didn't lose because of the gubernatorial disaster. He was a disaster in his own right. I'm told that many who voted straight Republican (for sec. of state, attorney general, etc.) took a pass on voting for Buck. The most commonly cited problem with him is that he blew the women's vote. My own beefs with him are that he's terrible on Tenth Amendment and immigration issues. I got into big arguments with him on these issues at one of his meet-n-greets.

Every day I ask myself if the Republican party has run so far off the rails that it's time to re-register Independent. If Buck somehow gets the nomination, that would be the last straw.

Holy crap, that Randy Baumgardner has some mustache:

Colorado usually doesn't look kindly on mustached Senate candidates--mustached Democrat Tom Strickland lost twice to Republican Wayne Allard by 52%-47% margins in 1996 and 2002--so we'll see how he does.

He ain’t gettin’ rid of it, either, since it’s his schtick. It’s so silly that one would have to shave to get elected to higher office. It makes them look more individualistic.

Buck wasn’t a great candidate himself, I wouldn’t put the blame on Maes.

Ah this is who Viennacon was talking about yesterday.

That’s a throwback stache right there. Dude looks like a Civil War era pol or a pitcher from the 70’s.

Forget Congress, he should be the Secretary of Agriculture for growing that thing.
