What is your favorite aviation movie?
one man's opinion...
Posted on 07/06/2013 4:42:52 PM PDT by ken5050
Well, the cable news networks are non stop with their coverage of the air crash in San Francisco. Looking at the pictures, it seems a miracle that the number of fatalities is so low. If there is one unintended consequence of this crash..at least we will be spared talk about Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman for the next few days. As the networks are talking aviation and nothing but, I thought it would be a slight diversion to discuss our favorite aviation themed movies.

The Flight of the Phoenix (with James Stewart) has to be one of the best as well. It really holds up. I still get a lump in my throat when Townsend gets the big ol’ round engine running.
Actually it’s my personal favorite, but as I once read somewhere, the Flight of the Phoenix about flying as about as much as Moby Dick is about fishing.

That was what made me sit up! “Hey! That’s a B-17 shadow!”
Thought I saw something nobody else had seen...:)

Gotta love that Gee Bee.
But it’s an aviation film for sure. There are after all many shots of a pair of Zeppelins.

The War Lover wasn’t bad, and had a lot of great B-17 footage that looked to be flown by ex B17 pilots, just for the movie.

Frank Tallman was killed doing a coors beer commercial by flying into a boxed canyon in an Aztec IIRC about 77 I think.

I don't recall ever seeing one that I didn't enjoy. Civilian wise, The Spirit of St. Louis, Waldo Pepper, The Wright Brothers, Bush Pilot, Six Days - Seven Nights, The People that Time Forgot, to name a few.

Strategic Air Command Corny, but I love all of the old SAC scenes.
Yes, that movie is a treasure, if only for the B-36 footage.

Whirlybirds the series.
That REALLY takes me back! I loved that show....even sent off for the plastic helo model. It was my favorite toy for a long time.
Since this thread has wandered far and wide (what a suprise....) let me recommend the British series “Foyle’s War” for some great Spitfire footage as well as being a joy to watch.

They have that serial on netflix, or they used to. I remember the saturday afternoon matinees during which they showed many, many cartoons and, of course, a serial of some sort. The Rocket Man was just one of many different serials.
