Well, the cable news networks are non stop with their coverage of the air crash in San Francisco. Looking at the pictures, it seems a miracle that the number of fatalities is so low. If there is one unintended consequence of this crash..at least we will be spared talk about Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman for the next few days. As the networks are talking aviation and nothing but, I thought it would be a slight diversion to discuss our favorite aviation themed movies.
Not the topic to bring up in an aviation oriented family. My husband and I could at least agree that we liked Waldo Pepper because of the remarks about the FAA. I forgot to add Test Pilot as one of my first loved aviation movies. My husband did tell me the other night I was writing checks my body couldn’t cash. My daughter just rolled her eyes and walked out of the room.
hehe...I love that part. I was looking for the animated gif I made of it, but you beat me to it!
“Shoot, a fella could have a pretty good time in Big D [Dallas] with all this stuff.”
“Flight of the Phoenix”. Originally made in the 60s, using the remains of a C-82 or C-119 with tail booms (essential to the plot), then I believe it has been remade recently as a real turkey.
The original is somewhat notable in that Paul Mantz, one of the great old Hollywood stunt pilots, was killed during the filming of the final scene.
Island in the Sky. My son says it is the best John Wayne movie ever.
Yes...that was a very underrated movie. I just saw it about a year ago for the first time.
The original plan was for the last survivor to open the bottle of brandy and toast all the others. Thats on hold..
I heard that. However it plays out will be fine because they’ll never be forgotten. God bless them.
The Sands of the Kalahari
30 Seconds over Tokyo
DamBusters
I’ll have to look at that MST3K (I love those guys).
My favorite aviation movie, and BEST Christmas movie is “A Wish for Wings that Work” - with Opus the Penquin.
“...I prefer to blame congress.”

:) awwwww..... dad joined the Air Force and held back his asthma issues, hoping he had outgrown them. Passed out in the chow line one day. That was it for his service. :( He so loved our country. I learned to love it, as well. I remember watching Above and Beyond when I was little. 30 years later (or whatever), my brother joined the Navy...stayed in for 26 years.
Saw that one with my Grandson. Many teachable moments.
Thanks for sharing....LOL!!!
“Executive Decision” with Kurt Russell (1996)
The great Waldo pepper +1
Great great movie. Great flight scenes.
Spirit of St. Louis
Twelve O’Clock High
Battle of Britain
It was very weird to watch this movie, and hear them talking about the dog and calling its name all through the movie...
LOL...I came back to this thread just to mention that in case anybody hadn't already...It was a fun movie.
Since I'm here, I might as well mention the flying/skydiving scenes in Fandango...
“Twelve OClock High”
One of the best all around movies made. I kept thinking long after about the elements of leadership.
I saw an interview of one of the last Tokyo Raiders. He said that was going to be their last reunion because they didn’t want to have one in which they were so feeble they couldn’t do anything.
Unless another one has died, I guess it is 3 left.
