A FReeper lapping day at the racetrack

This is in-car video of my 1986 Toyota MR2 at a lapping day at a local racetrack. The chassis is stock, the engine has a turbo and lots of go-fast parts. Watch this first to see the goodies under the skin.

The car has 255 RWHP, 179 ft lbs at 8500 rpm. The torque peak and HP peak are 300 RPM apart, at 8200 RPM and 8500 RPM.

I was having fun reeling in a Corvette on the front straightaway. Lapping day is gentelman racing, no agressive door to door stuff. It is good to let it all hang out with no fear of speeding tickets.

For the record the car has passed an IM240 emission test twice. Enjoy the video...

MR2s are very much under-appreciated. Nice job on the mods.

Could you possibly cram a railroad diesel air horn into that thing, too? Would make for some great entertainment.

Dang, not the stock turbo, is it? Big sucka.

Looks like a knuckle buster to work on.

Buddy of mine had a non turbo version, kept getting stolen, not sure why, but someone wanted it bad.

The turbo is an escapee from the Toyota/Gurney GT-P program in the 1990’s. Based on the T-4, it has an Inconel turbine, CNC machined billet impeller and can operate at a 4/1 pressure ratio.

It was set for 10 pounds of boost last year when the video was made. Bumped to 13 now, it is noticeably faster.

I had my 2001 SVT Cobra out there too. The MR2 is 20 MPH faster at the end of the front straight.

This first gen MR2 did not come with a turbo. It took 4 years of making custom goodies like the header to get it together. About $15K invested.

The hard part was finding a decent body to build on. It is actually easy to work on. The real fun was building it and tuning with the on-fly Electromotive system. I can change air/fuel ratio, timing, accelerator pump function etc while driving.

Actually, my brother drives while I pound the laptop when tuning.
