In an earlier post we suggested that cities will decay into violent anarchistic morasses within a week or two. In that article we were deliberately trying to look at a best case scenario (dont laugh the collapse of cities taking a week or two is, alas, a best case scenario!). Our projection was based on the best case hope that people would remain passive for a few days and it would only be when people realized no help was coming and they were starting to starve that things would turn truly nasty.
One of our readers, Lt. Dan, wrote in to share his perspective of what might go down, and alas, it is not nearly as sunny and optimistic as our earlier best case hope. His point is that violence will break outimmediately. There will not be days of ambiguity before things start to fail.

Best post of the day!
You better hope there is no God, because hoping for millions of deaths and laughing over millions of deaths will not endear you to him.
Just watch England, France and the Scandinavians.
It will hit them first.
Just got back from a little prep shopping, and a stop at the Hardware store for a project I’m working on....and realized....GLUE!! Freaking glue! All kinds of glue, Elmers, Wood, Model, Super.....need to get all of these...in case anyone else has overlooked these items
What do you call a roving band of inner city pillagers?
Moving targets.
Ah, someone has to control the resources, why not your band?
OMG! That is hilarious
World War Z
I am not really knowledgeable on survival after a major world wide catastrophe but one thing I think everyone probably agrees on.
Cities with dense populations will be hell on earth.
I was thinking of buying a cavalry sword and doing a reenactment. You know 95% of them will have never seen a horse before.
During the 2009 Ice Storm, I quickly found out how handy it was to have several extra pair of work gloves. Big Lots has a package of five pair of leather work gloves for around eight bucks. They last just as long as gloves from Wal-Mart, Lowe's, or Home Depot, but are well under half the price.
We have our own resources, bought and paid for by honest labor.
I love it. The next town west is VERY wealthy. Lots of large lots, some with horses. Maybe some mounted cavalry could come in handy....
When did I say I was hoping for it? That’s a mighty big beam you’ve got in your eye. It’s interfering with your ability to read.
I don’t own any horses, myself. But I know the one I’d borrow . . . he’s a Mustang. Short, stocky, and absolutely fearless.
Well said...
Maybe for about 40 or 50 days after that they will smell really bad bodies decompose.
I have been saying for some time that the best defense to this sort of situation is a medium sized city that is somewhat remote but that has a culturally homogenous population. Once the gasoline runs out after 3 to 5 days looters in cities will be trapped.
As yesterdays Boy Scouts urged: Be prepared!. As tomorrows Boy Scouts will urge: Be fabulous!Ruh-roh... tooooo funny... :)
I thought the cities were to burn last summer?
The first line of what you wrote:
I cant wait myself. When all those SNAP cards stop working here in Illnois Im going to pour myself three fingers of fine Bourbon, light a cigar, sit in my backyard and watch the rosy glow in the eastern sky as the south and west sides of Chicago go up in flames. And Im going to laugh, and laugh, and laugh.
