we've slowly accumulated a stock of pretty much everything one buys at a store from dry and canned food stuffs, to other goods like storage bags, wrapping paper, soap, laundry detergent, cleaners, tooth brushes, paper products, and so on and on. We've really gone out of our way to identify everything that might be applicable, even if they are items we use only irregularly. When we run out of something, we check storage, pull out another one if we have it, and add it to the shopping list - so that when we go shopping, we are mostly replenishing storage and not stuff in current use.

Having a well with a non-electric pump is probably the best solution as far a water goes.
I wish Marcella lived in my neighborhood, too. At least shes in my state :)
That goes both ways. I wish some of you were around me. Send me a Freepmail telling me which city/town you are near.
“Having a well with a non-electric pump is probably the best solution as far a water goes.”
That is ideal. I live in town so a well is out. I don’t know if Kart is in or out of town.
In town in the high desert of NM
OK, now I remember it was New Mexico but didn’t know if it was town or country. I’d use water barrels under downspouts and plastic pools you can inflate to catch more rainwater. I have two of those pools but mine are very small as my back garden is very small behind my townhouse. Consider a Big Berky for a water purifier. You probably have water purifiers.
Are you kidding me? Marcella will have subdued the zombie hordes with her Magic Zombie Machete by the third day of a SHTF scenario. She will be their queen, and they will do her bidding.
Just between you and me, Kartographer — your real concern if the SHTF is how to counterbalance Marcella and her queenish tyranny. Maybe you can maintain a fragile peace by dividing the country in half. I.e. Kart gets the region east of the Mississipi and Marcella gets the western part, or something like that.
You guys really need to expand your thinking to include the power politics of post-SHTF Amerika. It’s the big picture you should be looking at, not just the small ball of dried beans and backup generators.
“Its the big picture you should be looking at, not just the small ball of dried beans and backup generators.”
I don’t use backup generators. Make sure you live in Kartographers part of America as I don’t want you in mine.
You will shrug this off, put it off to paranoia or what not, because that’s what narcissist do, but my worry would be it a real SHTF situation would be how much damage and how many people you would drag down with you, how many you think have done wrong by being prepared and so have actually caused what ever happens, You will burn with the need to avenge yourself on those who in your mind caused the problem. For yourself you have the right to believe and free to choose what you wish to do. If you think prepping is wrong so be it.
I think you are wrong, but I would never mock you belittle your or harass you over it. And there’s the difference between us. I believe you are wrong, but I do not harass you over your choice, because I respect your right to choose, you on the other hand to not respect my right to choose.
You come to Free Republic and yet you do not respect the right of people who are not harming you to live as they choose. That’s why so many came to America, because they were not allow choice and were harassed, mocked and oppressed because of their beliefs even though those beliefs harmed no one.
The other difference between us is that I would fight for your right to choose, were you wish to see me punished for my choices.
Guess what, if you don't have those dried beans and generators, you don't have power politics.
India's moguls got rich on single grains of rice. Multiplied by millions.
You have issues.

Right, I’m the narcissist. Even as you endlessly congratulate yourself on those you have “helped”. You could be taken seriously if you were advocating a few weeks of preparedness, which would get 90% of people through 90% of any situation that has any real chance of actually happening. But you cast aspersions on those who advocate this level of preparedness, because they don’t buy into your drama-queen SHTF BS. At best you are right in a broken clock kind of way, where your apocalyptic doomsday prophesying may inspire someone to a practical level of preparedness. You deserve no more credit than that, even though you obviously seek it.
Yeah right, I have issues. Meanwhile you doom mongers are just perfectly well adjusted chaps...
What would be doom to you would be a minor bump (if that) for me.
You do have issues. And this is a well travelled road. Do you really want to go down it again?

It’s funny that a guy without running water thinks he can lecture me on what amounts to normalcy.
Yes, I think you people are out to lunch. Please prove me otherwise.
That's your discomfort zone isn't it?
We are headed into a new normal whether you like it or not.
And yes. Anytime you call, I'll leave instructions that I'm out for lunch.
Some crazies, they aren't worth dealing with.
I do understand your need for attention, late at night, all alone.
I'll pray for you.
/johnny
Please spare me your prayers; I really don’t need them. Believe it or not I have a fairly full life.
It really is out of a sense of decency and patriotism that I find you doomsdayers so utterly contemptible, and I will continue to resist you as long as I encounter your posts on FR.
Are the folks that went through Sandy really ok? Or just not reported on?
I'll pray for you. I think you need them.
As I said. We've been down this road. You know where it winds up.

I live a nice single and celibate 1870s lifestyle that suits me, with the added advantage of some high tech when I want it.
What part of that do you hold in contempt?
/johnny
Yes we’ve been down this road before, and it usually ends with you people looking silly.
As I’ve said a hundred times before, it makes sense to have a few weeks of supplies on hand. But this SHTH stuff and all the fantasizing that goes along with it is ridiculous.
