70+ votes for immigration reform?
Politco ^ | 4/25/13 | Carrie Budoff Brown

The two lead negotiators in the Senate’s Gang of Eight said on Thursday that they believe their immigration reform bill will not just have a filibuster proof majority in the Senate — but majority support from both parties.

“I think it is doable,” Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said at a breakfast sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said the bill cannot slip by with 60 votes because the House would feel less pressure to take it up. Others in the negotiating group have said they think the bill could win at least 70 Senate votes.

But the predictions of majority support from Republicans and Democrats is a more ambitious goal than any members have previously stated.

“We want a large Republican vote,” Schumer said at the breakfast.

He said the Gang of Eight had vote counting in mind while they were negotiating a deal between agricultural workers and growers on a visa program for the industry. Schumer said the group worked hard to win over growers in the Southeast, which is predominantly represented by Republicans and conservative Democrats.

The senators said they support amending the immigration overhaul bill to address shortcomings in the system that led to the Boston Marathon bombings.

It is too early know exactly what needs to be fixed, McCain said, but the potential solutions should be clear by the time the bill reaches the Senate floor in June.

“We are completely open to amendments that would in any way prevent what happened in Boston,” McCain said.

McCain said members of the Gang of Eight remain in contact with key House members. He said he spoke Wednesday with Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) to thank him for backing comprehensive immigration reform at an event Monday. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) has addressed the Republican Study Committee, McCain said.

But McCain added that the more serious conversations won’t take place until after the Senate passes a specific package.

McCain praised President Barack Obama’s role in the process, with Schumer adding that it has been “just about perfect.”

McCain quickly jumped in: “I wouldn’t go that far,” drawing laughs.

Yep, the Dems and Reps are just two wings of the same party, i.e., the party of Big Government. And that party has been bought and is owned by corporate interests.

Interesting theme. This is one from the 2010 election cycle:

It doesn't seem like we're getting through to them. We need another that says "Amnesty" on the pistol.

And the Republicans think they will have a chance of winning the Senate in 2014 after this backstab?

AND, why would it sweep Democrats into power. If they've ever bothered to take a good look, we remain a fairly evenly divided country for hundreds of years ~ which has to do with the political facts of life behind the single member district first past the post electoral system we use.

They bring in 30 million Mexicans, in the space of 2 elections they lose 15 million Democrats, and it balances out.

Always has; always will.

“How many generations will CA remain Democrat? “

Until 2030, when the hispanics become 51% and dump the Democrats and have their own majority Partidad de la Raza.

naw, you gots ta haf a national party affiliation ~ as even Bernie Sanders could tell you.

The California hispanics take over the Democrats and they dump the blacks, east asians, and gay liberals ~ who have nowhere to turn.

BTW, national parties go along with this sort of dumping ~ happens all the time. So the California hispancs become THE DEMOCRATS ~ and understanding a bit of hispanic political history, the old gay, black and asian Democrats who bellyache will get paid a visit they won't forget.

the world elite's ploy is to saturate the USA with people who have NO patriotism for the country as to eventually dominate in American society and will be more than willing to accept the creation of a North American Union (NAU), USA, Canada, and Mexico. The NAU has been pushed since the Clinton years and clearly the American people have apposed it each time it raised it's ugly head. NAFTA and GATT prepared the ground work for the NAU and I surmise once the NAU is a done deal it will open wide what used to be the country's borders. Any way this pie is sliced, the US government is really effing over we citizens in favor of the NWO.

What you say is true...IF you trust and believe in the American electorial system.

I no longer hold that belief or trust.

Me too. The last two presidential elections I voted for both McLame and Romney. I did it because I believed anyone but Nobama and the premise that a vote to a third party has the Perot effect. Both times our country was screwed not only on the candidate choice (I hate the NE getting first primaries, THAT HAS TO CHANGE!) but also in voter fraud.

However, I cannot in good conscience make the same mistake a third time. My days of holding my nose and voting R just to beat a D are over. The worst possible D won both times because the electorate in the NE and west are stupid. I will vote for third party if needed or for the first time in my adult life just not vote (and that makes me very sad).

Take a look at CA and you will see our future.

Every ten years we have what amounts to an amnesty. With 1.2 million LEGAL IMMIGRANTS ENTERING ANNUALLY, they will be able to vote eventually and two thirds of them will vote Dem. Illegal immigration is the shiny little bauble that distracts us from the real game changer--legal immigration. The status quo will make the Dems the permanent majority party. Amnesty just hastens the process.

i live in an overwhelmingly immigrant neighborhood. They’re about half Republicans and half Democrats ~ depends on what they do.

MD isn't CA or is representative of the US in terms of the immigrant population. MD is among the bluest of blue states. Immigrants vote two to one Democrat. It is simply a fact. 50% to 60% of the illegal aliens lack even a high school degree. They will be voting Dem.

87 percent of the 1.2 million legal immigrants entering annually are minorities as defined by the U.S. Government and almost all of the illegal aliens are minorities. By 2019 half of the children 18 and under in the U.S. will be classified as minorities and by 2042, half of the residents of this country will be minorities. Generally, immigrants and minorities vote predominantly for the Democrat Party. Hence, Democrats view immigration as a never-ending source of voters that will make them the permanent majority party.

LOL. We have actual exit polls showing how minorities and immigrants voted. There is a direct correlation between minority and immigrant status and how you vote. In 2012 Hispanics voted 71% for Obama as did Asians 73% and blacks 95%. Non-Hispanic whites voted 59% for Romney.

I hope you are not making the absurd argument that minorities and immigrants don't vote overwhelmingly Democrat.

Exit Polls ~ bwahahahahahahaha ~ the one telling you about east asians was pretty much isolated to a single polling station in Honolulu where virtually 100% of the voters were Japanese Americans.

They OWN the Democrat party in Hawaii~

Now you know how often voters lie to you. Those guys who said they voted Republican in Hawaii for example ~ they all lied.

How dense can you be? Just look at the election results and the demographics of the district or state. If you had taken the time to read the referenced study by Prof Gimpel of the U of MD, you will see the correlation between immigration and voting patterns in the 50 largest counties in the country.

We don't need polls to tell us what the most accurate poll of all tells us, i.e., the actual election results. As someone who lives in Fairfax County where 30% of the population is now foreign born, I can say after living here for 34 years, demography is destiny. VA is purple and will soon go blue.

BTW, you still need to be a citizen to vote. And those Japanese American voters in Hawaii ~ ? We're getting down to the last of the Issei so they're all American born ~ just like the Filipinos ~ and they all vote Republican!

As a rule of thumb, in Fairfax ~ if there's a woman in the family who is an accountant, whatever their ethnicity they vote Republican.
