The two lead negotiators in the Senates Gang of Eight said on Thursday that they believe their immigration reform bill will not just have a filibuster proof majority in the Senate but majority support from both parties.
I think it is doable, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said at a breakfast sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor.
Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said the bill cannot slip by with 60 votes because the House would feel less pressure to take it up. Others in the negotiating group have said they think the bill could win at least 70 Senate votes.
But the predictions of majority support from Republicans and Democrats is a more ambitious goal than any members have previously stated.
We want a large Republican vote, Schumer said at the breakfast.
He said the Gang of Eight had vote counting in mind while they were negotiating a deal between agricultural workers and growers on a visa program for the industry. Schumer said the group worked hard to win over growers in the Southeast, which is predominantly represented by Republicans and conservative Democrats.
The senators said they support amending the immigration overhaul bill to address shortcomings in the system that led to the Boston Marathon bombings.
It is too early know exactly what needs to be fixed, McCain said, but the potential solutions should be clear by the time the bill reaches the Senate floor in June.
We are completely open to amendments that would in any way prevent what happened in Boston, McCain said.
McCain said members of the Gang of Eight remain in contact with key House members. He said he spoke Wednesday with Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) to thank him for backing comprehensive immigration reform at an event Monday. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) has addressed the Republican Study Committee, McCain said.
But McCain added that the more serious conversations wont take place until after the Senate passes a specific package.
McCain praised President Barack Obamas role in the process, with Schumer adding that it has been just about perfect.
McCain quickly jumped in: I wouldnt go that far, drawing laughs.
Yep, the Dems and Reps are just two wings of the same party, i.e., the party of Big Government. And that party has been bought and is owned by corporate interests.
And the Republicans think they will have a chance of winning the Senate in 2014 after this backstab?
They bring in 30 million Mexicans, in the space of 2 elections they lose 15 million Democrats, and it balances out.
Always has; always will.
“How many generations will CA remain Democrat? “
Until 2030, when the hispanics become 51% and dump the Democrats and have their own majority Partidad de la Raza.
Interesting point. Thanks.
The California hispanics take over the Democrats and they dump the blacks, east asians, and gay liberals ~ who have nowhere to turn.
BTW, national parties go along with this sort of dumping ~ happens all the time. So the California hispancs become THE DEMOCRATS ~ and understanding a bit of hispanic political history, the old gay, black and asian Democrats who bellyache will get paid a visit they won't forget.
What you say is true...IF you trust and believe in the American electorial system.
I no longer hold that belief or trust.
Me too. The last two presidential elections I voted for both McLame and Romney. I did it because I believed anyone but Nobama and the premise that a vote to a third party has the Perot effect. Both times our country was screwed not only on the candidate choice (I hate the NE getting first primaries, THAT HAS TO CHANGE!) but also in voter fraud.
However, I cannot in good conscience make the same mistake a third time. My days of holding my nose and voting R just to beat a D are over. The worst possible D won both times because the electorate in the NE and west are stupid. I will vote for third party if needed or for the first time in my adult life just not vote (and that makes me very sad).
Every ten years we have what amounts to an amnesty. With 1.2 million LEGAL IMMIGRANTS ENTERING ANNUALLY, they will be able to vote eventually and two thirds of them will vote Dem. Illegal immigration is the shiny little bauble that distracts us from the real game changer--legal immigration. The status quo will make the Dems the permanent majority party. Amnesty just hastens the process.
i live in an overwhelmingly immigrant neighborhood. They’re about half Republicans and half Democrats ~ depends on what they do.
87 percent of the 1.2 million legal immigrants entering annually are minorities as defined by the U.S. Government and almost all of the illegal aliens are minorities. By 2019 half of the children 18 and under in the U.S. will be classified as minorities and by 2042, half of the residents of this country will be minorities. Generally, immigrants and minorities vote predominantly for the Democrat Party. Hence, Democrats view immigration as a never-ending source of voters that will make them the permanent majority party.
it’s a poll result ~
I hope you are not making the absurd argument that minorities and immigrants don't vote overwhelmingly Democrat.
Immigration, Political Realignment, and the Demise of Republican Political Prospects
They OWN the Democrat party in Hawaii~
Now you know how often voters lie to you. Those guys who said they voted Republican in Hawaii for example ~ they all lied.
We don't need polls to tell us what the most accurate poll of all tells us, i.e., the actual election results. As someone who lives in Fairfax County where 30% of the population is now foreign born, I can say after living here for 34 years, demography is destiny. VA is purple and will soon go blue.
I live in Fairfax County as well. When I moved here it was a Democrat dominated and contaminated hellhole.
As a rule of thumb, in Fairfax ~ if there's a woman in the family who is an accountant, whatever their ethnicity they vote Republican.
