The unprecedented manhunt in Boston that concluded successfully Friday night earned law enforcement authorities the gratitude of the nation.
But as relief replaces fear, the debate about what this episode means for the future is already beginning. And one of the most unsettling questions is whether the violence-related lockdown of a major U.S. city — an extraordinary moment in American history — sets a life-altering precedent.
There are already worries that the effort to protect the people of Boston contained an element of overreaction. Local authorities told the city and nearby suburbs to “shelter in place” throughout the day and into the evening. They closed businesses, shuttered government buildings and suspended all public transportation in the metro area.
That decision concerned some political leaders and policy experts.
Former Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.) said it is “hard to imagine what could justify directing the entire population of the city to ‘shelter in place.’”
Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger of Maryland, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, stopped short of directly criticizing the decision, but he lamented the development as a win of sorts for terrorists....

Depends on the situation. If grenades and “cocktails” are being tossed, then inside would be good.
“For how long should you comply ?”
When the “circus” is over.
“Do you allow the police into your home to conduct a search ?”
Only if they are allowed (Of course a signed warrant would be needed if no PC is there). No knock warrants are a no-no though.
“Do you look to the Police/Gov’t for permission to go to work ?”
Nope.
“Do you wait for the “all clear” so you can buy food ?”
Unless a Republic form of government (3 Branches functioning) and proper order is established (Been in a lot of natural disasters, sometimes curfews are needed to protect property and forget about going out in 70+ winds with sideways rain hitting you in the face) people should be free to travel (Public transportation could be stopped, not a right).
shelter in place == martial law without calling it martial law.
I saw a post somewhere that said they had a warrant that basically said they could search anywhere- for that particular suspect. So much is out there it is hard to know what is true.
The property owner (may have been his son that was interviewed this morning) where suspect #2 was found said it took them over 30 minutes to get 911 to answer when they reported finding the boat with blood in it. That call is what led LEO to find him.
Shutting the city down might have saved a life or two.
But think about it.
I read that the safe shelter thing involved about 1,200,000.
According to the census it should have involved a greater number.
But take the 1.2 million.
They shut down cell phones for a while.
Trains, buses, airports shut down.
People told not to go outside at all for any reason.
In a population of 1.2 million, how many fires, heart attacks, broken legs, maternity emergencies, etc., take place every 24 hours?
These people were put at risk because of the increased difficulty in getting help.
How many people living alone who eat out more than they cook? What do these people do for food since they would have little in the house.
How many small shops who exist only from day to day that will not get over the loss of business?
All of these things have a cost, and to some a very high cost. These costs need to be weighed against the need for a shut down.
And finally, the #2 guy was found by a citizen who disobeyed the instructions to say inside at all costs, and who went outside (to take a smoke, according to a relative).
Also remember that #1 was killed in a gun battle that took place because they carjacked a guy who called the cops.
Again, an event that would not have taken place if everyone had been hiding behind locked doors.
So the two events that resulted in death and capture of the bad guys took place because of citizens who were doing their normal thing.
The lock down was a mistake.
I caught part of an interview with a husband/parent in that area and I don't know if it was the first firefight the night before this last shooting at the guy in the boat, or the shooting when the guy was in the boat, but this man showed a picture or calendar that was on the wall in his daughter's bedroom and a bullet had gone through that item. Naturally, he was distressed a bullet had come into his house in his young daughter's bedroom.
That shooting killing that one, sounded like a million gun shots. I have to wonder if cop's aim or just sort of shoot in the vicinity of the perp.
It was the governor who made the order as I read what he said about giving the order.
I can imagine what you would say if you were “ordered” to stay in your house and not even go outside. Hell, do you even have a lock on your door as the order was to stay inside with your doors locked.
That would have been a different lesson to the terrorists of the future.
As it is, they saw a huge city shut down, everyone running around and running their mouth on TV about how terrible things are...
This is what terrorists want to see. 1 million or so cowering in fear, millions of dollars in revenue lost, etc.
They value the destruction of markets as much as the destruction of life.
Had the citizens of Boston stood on the corner with firearms, the terrorists would have a different view.
If I’d been in Boston, I would have used it as an excuse to take off work and
start the weekend early. I wouldn’t however stay off the streets. That was silly

That's why you have these people chanting “USA”, after having been put under martial law. Everyone involved needs a quick education on our Constitution, or we are a lost cause. Law enforcement needs to stop imposing unconstitutional police states for the “safety of the people”. If people can't accept any responsibility for their own safety they will just be a slave to whatever evil rises in this country, and they deserve nothing better if they refuse to wake up.
Those in the military and law enforcement need to speak out when things like this occur. You can't be silent on issues like this just because most people involved have good intentions, or because it's an unpopular view at the moment. That's why it's so important to speak out now. We are fighting an uphill battle we may not win.
This is the kind of stuff we will see in the future when they are confiscating our guns, and the ones enforcing it will not know the entire truth(if any of it), for why they are doing what they are. That's how they will get many to do it who wouldn't otherwise.
We need stop panicking when things like this happen. Non-law enforcement civilians need to stop their dishonorable cowering, and at least arm themselves as well as possible. Small neighborhood militias would be a good idea to protect communities.
Those in states with Unconstitutional gun laws need to defy those laws, and organize peaceful protest using acts of civil disobedience. This is what's being planned here in Colorado on July 02, the day after the unconstitutional gun control laws go into effect. There will be an open defiance of the 15 round magazine limit with a +15 round magazine swap. If you don't have a magazine you want to lose just buy some cheap $10 30 round magazines like I did.
Even if you don't own a firearm with a +15 magazine just get one to support the cause. Actually there will probably be people who have a magazine they will give you for the protest. I got a cheap 30 round mag, and 47 round mag for the AK that doesn't have very good reviews but were cheap. I haven't tried them personally. I'm sure they work fine on same AK variants.
Their is suppose to be similar events around the nation on July 02, as well. Although I haven't heard what they are yet. We have to be more proactive about saving our Constitution, and our nation. We have a tough road ahead when you look at everything we must overcome to do that.

It is the same lunatic logic you see when the power is out yet they encourage
the folks to access websites for the latest information.
They were blanks. The HRT team fired many rounds of blanks to get the target to waste ammo firing back.
Seemed to work.
It was not a legal order. The issue was you could not navigate the streets. In the locked down area of Watertown, you could leave but they would not let you in.
They knocked on the doors and verified everything was ok. They got permission to search yards and outbuildings. They were not kicking in doors.
Can you imagine running a pot grow house on the next block? Yikes.
The fine was $500 if you went on the road and impaired snow removal. They weren’t stopping you, but if you caused them to have to dig you out...you were screwed.

I don’t recall them actually saying “Martial Law”. In Memphis in 1968 curfews were imposed and all alcohol and gun sales prohibited
