As Senate Democrats struggle to build support for new gun control legislation, the American Civil Liberties Union now says its among those who have serious concerns about the bill.
Those concerns have the capacity to prove a major setback to Sen. Harry Reids current gun bill, which includes language from earlier bills introduced by Sens. Chuck Schumer and Barbara Boxer.
In an exclusive interview with The Daily Caller, a top lobbyist for the ACLU announced that the group thinks Reids current gun bill could threaten both privacy rights and civil liberties.
The inclusion of universal background checks the poll-tested lynchpin of most Democratic proposals raises two significant concerns, the ACLUs Chris Calabrese told TheDC Wednesday.
Calabrese a privacy lobbyist was first careful to note that the ACLU doesnt strictly oppose universal background checks for gun purchases. If youre going to require a background check, we think it should be effective, Calabrese explained.
However, we also believe those checks have to be conducted in a way that protects privacy and civil liberties. So, in that regard, we think the current legislation, the current proposal on universal background checks raises two significant concerns, he went on.
The first is that it treats the records for private purchases very differently than purchases made through licensed sellers. Under existing law, most information regarding an approved purchase is destroyed within 24 hours when a licensed seller does a [National Instant Criminal Background Check System] check now, Calabrese said, and almost all of it is destroyed within 90 days.
Calabrese wouldnt characterize the current legislations record-keeping provision as a national gun registry which the White House has denied pursuing but he did say that such a registry could be a second step.

Better read the fine print.
If it is “unconstitutional” to do background checks on voters or to charge them a “fee” to vote, then it sure as hell is “unconstitutional” to do it to those Americans exercising their Second Amendment rights.
And Reid and the DemoQuacks care about the constitution and civil rights? As Diane Feinstein recently said in regard to her gun ban proposal: Congress don’t care about the Constitution, and it just passes the laws it wants.
My pop put a shotgun on a chair on the front porch, loaded. All day long people passed by and never once did the gun shoot anyone. I think it was defective, or something.
ACLU says Reids gun legislation could threaten privacy rights, civil liberties
Seems like hell’s experiencing a bit of a cold snap. Even the ACLU gets it right once a decade or so.
A reasonable, logicical point.
Methinks, they would find a way around via some provision of the General Welfare clause - or some such nonsense...
A background check should check the status of the buyer, not record the serial number of the gun he bought.
“Right”? What is this “right” of which you speak, comrade? The only “right” is the state.
This is the best 7 minutes I have seen on gun control.

Didn’t see any mention of that whole “-—shall not be infringed-—” idea. You wouldn’t expect the whiners to actually stick with the fundamentals. But anything to whittle down enthusiasm for obamuzzie’s big plan.

Nah, it was a geographic problem. In Chicago, it would have gone on a rampage and killed at least six people, seven or eight on a week end. Maybe it's the air coming off Lake Michigan.
That gun must have had wheels. LOL
Just damn !
Agree and I hope this will be used to legally challenge this assault to the second amendment.
Excellent! Thanks.
Thanks for the ping Glocks!
