Yesterday, the federal government fired its starter’s pistol and began the race for the coveted and relatively rare H-1B visa. This year, our government will allow 85,000 people to work in the United States on these visas. Last year, if you waited longer than 2 1/2 months to apply one, you were out of luck. If your business needed a worker you could have hired if our government didn’t have such a silly quota system, you were likewise out of luck. The Chamber of Commerce wants a much larger number of visas available, which would rely on more government meddling.
I’ve been thinking a lot about our immigration system lately, mostly because Republicans in Congress are about to commit several acts of political stupidity. They hope to finally solve the Washington-created puzzle called “comprehensive immigration reform” in a way that brings more Hispanics to their Republican yard.
I’m no politician, as you may have noticed. If I were, I’d be lousy at it. My first “Gang of Eight, Plus Jimmie” meeting would end with me calling Lindsey Graham a vote-whoring waste of a public employee salary. However, if you put me in charge of our immigration system, I’d give this speech after a year.....

Here is my speech. Moratorium on all immigration for 2 years with diplomatic exception only. Repeal the 1965 Immigration Act. Build an impenetrable wall on the entire border with Mexico. Deport all illegal aliens whenever they commit any crime or if they become known to government or law-enforcement.

Allow any immigrant with technical skills. We do not need unskilled labor. Of the 1,000,000 plus immigrants admitted every year with permanent resident visa, less than 8% have technical skills. Most are family based. US citizens sponsor their elderly parents and sign them up immediately for supplemental social security, food stamps, medicaid, and many other welfare options.
That, and make sure that people know that the guest worker programs end on repeal. Say that the programs cannot be effectively managed and that ending those programs will save taxpayer dollars. When they are repealed(along with the Immigration Act that enables them), announce that they are not coming back for the same reason.
The market would then be able to deal with actual skill gaps, not claims that betray basic economics(read: shortages drive prices up, not down).
Guest worker programs may have good intentions, but they’re a pool of labor designed to be captive and not on the path to being a productive citizen.

I always say “do not blame the beggar for receiving a big handout”. It is our bleeding heart politicians who make the rules (laws) and people take advantage of every chance they get. That is the method democrats use to get votes. More dependents, the better for them.
Technical skills? There are unemployed Americans with ALL of the requisite technical skills.
This shortage is an HR concept. By writing job requirements they make it look as if that the computer programmer must have had experience managing Yak-Milking-Robot-Software in Nepal, etc. Simply got to have it! The fact that a stray Irish Setter could learn the arcana involved in a couple of days OJT, cuts no ice with your average HR anus, who is out busily looking for the perfect AAA* Asian Transgendered Cross Dresser to beef up the Diversity Stats.
The first step in getting skilled Americans back to work is shooting every 10th HR Department Member once a week for 6 weeks. After that, even these worthless EEOC drones might get the picture. Let the people who actually need the help find it. Here.

Barbra Streisand. Every guest worker hired by a private company helps that company survive. The worker pays all taxes and contributes towards social security for seniors like myself. If the company goes bankrupt, loss to the country is much bigger. Every single person working in that company loses a job. People who object to guest worker programs are people with easily learned skills such as computer programming who are jealous because they can’t demand high wages. Programming is much easier to learn than something like chemical engineering, architectural engineering, biochemistry, pharmacist etc. There are plenty of jobs in such fields which require years of education.
Software is one of the easiest to learn skills. There are millions of programmers floating around in the world. That is not my definition of technical skills. See my post directly above.

Meh, I don’t care much for that line of thinking. Give us your tired, your hungry, your poor. Just make them come through the front door, get a medical check, learn the basics of our American system and attest their loyalty to it.
I’ve known plenty of immigrants whose only technical skills were the ability to push a broom, or hold a paintbrush, and they contributed more to our country than most native born folks in my generation. So I say we can afford to lower the bar a little, but only for those who show respect for our laws from the outset, and don’t try to sneak in and make unreasonable demands of us.

Enough of H1b bullshit. All that several million Hindus have done is destroy the wages of native computer engineers and help elect Obama. While they are smart and hardworking they do not share our culture, religion, our values. Ask them about guns sometime. They are total SHEEP.

I understand your sentiments. However the entire world is becoming more advanced in technology. To be able to compete in world markets we need skilled engineers & skilled techies. Our universities and colleges are turning out many more liberal arts graduates than medical, engineering, science graduates. Old days when hard work with low level skills was sufficient are no longer.
But the very last thing we need is immigrants (legal or illegal) who can not support themselves.
It’s more than just programming/IT that gets the guest worker treatment - it wouldn’t stay there(if it was) given the incentive to expand. These programs are government interference with the job market, plain and simple.
The market would still figure out a way if the people had to make the effort to immigrate, have a pathway to citizenship, and the desire to become a productive US citizen. These are the kind of people that would want to start businesses, create jobs, and bring new ideas to the US.
I object to them out of the fraud that they create in the first place. If you want to suggest that it’s sour grapes about not being able to demand a high wage, then why would the guest worker be preferred for the same/lower skill level at the same wage? They don’t become citizens, they have significant barriers about switching employers, and are treated similarly as illegals are treated.

The Republicans are simply going to allow more future Democrats to come across the border and end up shooting themselves in the foot.
