I understand your sentiments. However the entire world is becoming more advanced in technology. To be able to compete in world markets we need skilled engineers & skilled techies. Our universities and colleges are turning out many more liberal arts graduates than medical, engineering, science graduates. Old days when hard work with low level skills was sufficient are no longer.

But the very last thing we need is immigrants (legal or illegal) who can not support themselves.

It’s far beyond lack of a skilled workforce. I know quit a few electrical & mechanical engineers, technicians, and skilled trades people who were kicked to the curb during the last “rightsizing”, mainly because their demands of being paid for their contributions were trumped by the appeal for cheaper foreign counterparts. When the CEO and the HR dept. of your company figure out that you can be replaced by someone from a foreign land, with your same skill set, albeit at a much lower wage, your career will be toast. This is the double edge sword that young Americans face today. They face an export of manufacturing and technology work, and face an influx of cheap imported labor. And everybody around here wonders why they have pretty much given up. Your average 20 something has to. Compete against imported labor for virtually every open job on the market, from burger flippers, to MBA’s.
