A gushing letter Republican U.S. Senate candidate Gabriel Gomez wrote to Gov. Deval Patrick asking to be appointed as interim senator praising President Obama and conflicting with his own current campaign policy drew howls of derision from his GOP rivals yesterday.
How can voters ever trust Gomez again when he tells Gov. Patrick one thing in a private letter, that he never thought would see the light of day, and then tells Republican primary voters something completely different on very important issues? said state Rep. Dan Winslows spokesman, Charlie Pearce.
Former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivans campaign also blasted the letter, saying, Hes clearly presenting himself to Gov. Patrick in a manner that not only flatters the governor personally, but also demonstrates his willingness to carry forward the Obama/Democratic agenda.
Gomez, who released the Jan. 17 letter yesterday, wrote to Patrick that he supports the positions that President Obama has taken on immigration reform and gun control. However, hes said in his current campaign he opposes a federal ban on assault weapons, which is part of Obamas proposal.
Gomezs letter also played up his appeal as a bipartisan pick, boasting that he supported President Obama in 2008.
Gomez gushed to Patrick that, Appointing a moderate Republican would set a national example of sorely needed bipartisanship and would reinforce your growing national reputation for bold and thoughtful leadership.
A Gomez spokesman said that the former Navy SEAL simply supported Obamas basic positions on the issues, and said he only donated to Obama and didnt vote for him.
Patrick never responded to the two-page letter, the Gomez campaign said. It was submitted when Patrick was deciding who to appoint as a temporary senator to replace now-U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. He settled on his former chief of staff Mo Cowan on Jan. 30.
Gomez also released some basic information yesterday about his taxes between 2007 and 2011, saying he has paid roughly 21 percent of his income.
I'm voting for Sullivan.
Isn’t “Massachusetts Republican” an oxymoron?
There must be, what, a dozen of them ?
Better that the guy be outed now than later.
Jeesh!
I do however think that Brown’s a pragmatic guy who’s as good a Republican who has hope of hanging on to MA statewide office.
This Gomez guy is just embarrassing, however—whatever your politics!
No, the entire middle of MA is republican. The liberals hold the population centers on the coast and down to the Cape and the western college areas. Conservatives came out in force to elect Brown in 2010. When he went moderate/liberal in 2012, we left our ballots blank. We’re not about to nominate another moderate, becuase he’ll lose, as both Brown and Romney did.
I always contact the RNC and other Republican groups when these scumbags come to the surface...remind them they had better start cleaning house! Lets them know we are watching!
Who donates to a candidate and doesn’t vote for them? Only corrupticrats.
The republican party is co-opted by statists. Witness the lack of anything resembling resistance from the republican controlled house.
“But I have to tell you, I have to tell you, he is a decent person, and a person that you do not have to be scared (sic) as President of the United States.
Barack Obama is a stone cold marxist that hates America and white people. He is the sum of all our political fears. We all knew it. John McCain is a co-opted traitor and patsy for the single party statists.
Has Teddy Kennedy Jr. moved back from CT to lay claim as the “rightful” owner of that Senate seat?

Why would you give money to a candidate if YOU AREN'T GOING TO VOTE FOR THE CANDIDATE???
“Why would you give money to a candidate if YOU AREN’T GOING TO VOTE FOR THE CANDIDATE???”
He’s trying to fool the people into thinking he was playing a rope a dope in the democratic primary. What’s really going on is he’s a democrat politician trying to make a name for himself (navy seal, etc) and keep a conservative from getting the republican nomination at the same time.
Before long, he’ll be running for something as an independent or a democrat “because the republican party has moved away from me.” We’re all wise to this game now. Arlen Specter, Charlie Crist, Dede Scozzafava, Lincoln Chafee, Lisa Murkowski, etc.
