I believe that he, like a lot of whites who came here early on, was bond servant whose debt or some obligation was sold to someone for a period of time. After a period of years the bond was considered to be paid and the person was free of their committment. A lot of people white and black came here under those conditions in the early years. There were a number of people on the Mayflower who were bond servants.
