500+ Injured, Major Havoc Wreaked as Russians Reportedly Intercept Meteorite with Missiles

ATTN MODERATOR: This article is NOT copied, but authored 100% by myself (and x-posted at Reaganite Republican) with the exception of one small quote from Russia Today near the bottom (duly noted and linked)

All orginal Russian info/data sources noted and linked at the bottom, as always...

Some pretty serious damage was delivered upon six Russian towns -and hundreds injured- when a hefty meteorite streaked across the sky, approached the Earth's surface in Chelyabisk Oblast (region) of the southern Ural Mountains near the border with Kazakhstan, then exploded early this morning, cca 9:30-10AM local time.

Fragments fell and windows shattered as many reportedly freaked out, fearing some UFO apocalypse was unfolding before their eyes. The malicious space rock was part of a larger meteor shower over Russia, yet in a league all by itself: at least one large explosion was heard that created a massive shockwave, shaking buildings throughout the area. The worst physical damage occurred to a zinc factory, with was hit by more than one fragment and had an outside wall collapse.

Hospitals in the sparsely populated region were reportedly packed with over 400 people seeking treatment, though thankfully no fatalities have been reported from this most extraordinary event. The majority suffered cuts and concussions, but those who lost all their windows are said to be scrambling for materials to cover-up with, as the temperature's in the 20s F.  Russian meteor explosion

From the video (below) one can see the meteorite coming apart at the last moments -and only small-moderate fragments hitting the ground. But while some news agencies are simply reporting that a meteorite had hit, exploded, or disintegrated, unconfirmed reports from military sources out of Russia have the Russian air defenses hitting it with a missile salvo....

RT:

According to unconfirmed reports, the meteorite was intercepted by an air defense unit at the Urzhumka settlement near Chelyabinsk.

A missile salvo blew the meteorite to pieces at an altitude of 20 kilometers, local newspaper Znak reports quoting a source in the military. Regnum news agency quoted a military source who claimed that the vapor condensation trail of the meteorite speaks to the fact that the meteorite was intercepted by air defenses...

these things move way too fast for an intercept - though dont be surprised if in the coming weeks we find that te object was photographed / filmed by a geo stationary sattelite

If they can show film of thunderstoms and sprites from space, they have this on film

The missile intercept story is quoted from ‘Russian military’ source in Russia Today, their biggest internet news site I think

It’s at the link, but not confirmed of course

I was listening to NPR this morning. They said this was “not relatedd” to the meteor coming close to the earth today. Let me get this straight: I’m 59 years old. No meteor of this size has hit the earth within my lifetime. And the day a huge meteor is passing between the earth and our geosynchronous satellites and I am LITERALLY looking for any news about it actually hitting the earth, a large meteor (allbeit smaller) collides with the earth, doing significant damage, limited only by location, and it is NOT RELATED to the big one?

When I became a Christian in 1981 I stopped believing in coincidences. And rightly so.

NPR really is lunacy.

I don’t trust “news” sources that don’t know the difference between a meteoroid, a meteor, and a meteorite.

And don’t even get me started on AK-47 “clips”. ;-)

We may discover more about this when things settle down, but apparently this meteor was coming from the opposite direction to the one we all know about.

I immediately made the connection between this meteorite and it’s big brother coming by later. If this one hit the Earth I can see it’s big killer brother doing the same.

I believe the NASA channel will be tracking the big asteroid starting at 2 pm EST.

We have most of the observatories on the planet, including those in Russia, glued to the skies awaiting the arrival of the asteroid that's going to pass just 17,000 miles away ~ of course they'd needed some early indication, and there it was, on line.

The entire story is possible ~ but the real question is did they hit it.

Let us turn to lazmataz for his opinion.

So, laz, would you hit it?

Its much more likely the meteor exploded or broke apart due to the heat and violence of its entry into the atmosphere.

Russian surface to air systems are light years ahead of anything simular in the West, but that does not mean they cannot be defeated. The Directorates responsible for air defense along Russia's borders - where this incident happened - are ALWAYS on and deployed.

Russian sir defenses are currently at some version of the S-300PMU3 / S-400 Triumf / SA-21 Growler systems. According to a 5-6 year out-of-date article, they could intercept missiles moving at mach 14. or 4.9km/s.
http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/russia/s-400.htm

From the article: “Their exceptionally high accuracy is ensured by the missile's main secret, the so-called transverse control engine, which rules out misses during the final approach trajectory. The transverse control engine is still without parallel in the world.”

“The radar's range is up to 600 km for targets flying between 40-75,000 m, 400 km for targets at 20,000 m, 300 km for targets at 10,000 m, and at least 65 km for targets flying at 500 m.”

So if the report turns out to be correct, we could assume that more than one missile was fired; more likely missiles from each category were launched to insure a hit.

Russian almost always shoot first and ask question later.

I do not doubt that they launched, whether the missiles hit or not is another question. But it should have been possible, since meteors do not have counter measures.

I think the worKing concept with NIKE was to explode the interceptor in the path of the missile and let the faster pRojectile run into the shock wave. Kind of like a spike strip in the sky to disable a racing “car.”
