XXXXXXX XXXXXXX XXXXXXX
Dear Mr. XXXXX:
Thank you for contacting me regarding the Newtown, Connecticut Elementary School shooting. I appreciate hearing from you about this tragic event.
On December 14, 2012, our nation experienced an unspeakable tragedy in Newtown. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of this terrible event, as well as to their families and loved ones. Now is the time to pause and reflect as to how we can prevent such events in the future in a manner consistent with our rights and values. Rest assured, I support law abiding American citizens who choose to exercise their Second Amendment rights.
In the wake of this tragedy, several pieces of legislation are expected to be introduced in the 113th Congress. Senator Dianne Feinstein announced her plans to introduce an assault weapons ban bill on the first day of the 113th Congress which would ban the sale, transfer, importation and possession of assault weapons, as defined in that bill, not retroactively, but prospectively. Her legislation would also ban the sale of clips of more than ten bullets. Additionally, President Obama has announced that Vice President Joe Biden will be heading up an effort to form administration polices to curb gun-related violence. The White Houses emerging gun-control strategy includes support for an assault weapons ban.
In the coming weeks, I look forward to discussing with my colleagues these and other legislative options as we consider the current and future role of our federal government in preventing these atrocious tragedies. Be assured, I value your input and will keep your thoughts in mind as Congress debates these issues. Again, thank you for contacting me. It is an honor to represent you in the U.S. House of Representatives.
In Service, Todd Young Member of Congress
TY/JL
The part about, " the current and future role of our federal government in preventing these atrocious tragedies" is very concerning to me...seems like another reason for higher taxes and govt. control than a safety solution...
Pretty sad...
Here's my original letter: http://babylonscovertwar.com/OSR/Opinion/Opinion%20on%20Gun%20Laws%20and%20the%20Fiscal%20Cliff%2030%20DEC%202012.docx
I changed the last paragraph to fit sending it to my elected leadership in Wash DC..
I`m always distrustful of any congresscritter`s use of the phrase, “Be assured.”
“The part about, the current and future role of our federal government in preventing these atrocious tragedies” is very concerning to me.”
Well, there is an appropriate role of the Federal government in preventing these atrocious tragedies — to outlaw “Gun Free Zones” at government locations (such as schools) nationally. And to force private property owners that post their property as “Gun Free Zones” to accept liability for their patrons getting shot up by kooks that see that declaration as a free-fire zone opportunity. Make it a strict liability issue. I could get behind that kind of response.
Another ignoramus!

“Be assured” means “Trust me”. Never trust anyone that says “Trust me”. Especially when it’s the first thing out of their mouth.
I was reassured by that. I don’t own any firearms that use clips. Whew, guess I’ll be keeping my thirty round magazines... Why are people this ignorant, who can’t even be bothered to learn about a subject, being allowed to consider making law regarding the subject?
Really? Why? People say the Dems want to end poverty yet last summer's report showed poverty is worse now than it's ever been. Since 1950, in all but 9 years, the Dems have controlled either the House or the Senate or both. Don't ya think 60 years is enough time for them to solve the problem? Or...could it be...the Dems want the poor to be dependent upon them? Perhaps...just maybe...they give people 99 weeks to find a job or hand out free cell phones (how can you possibly justify that?) to buy enough votes with your money to keep them in office.
When Obozo complains the rich don't pay their fair share...true, they don't. The top 10% of income earners in this country foot 71% of the federal tax bill. If anything, they need a huge tax break. Don't believe me? Read what's happening in France because of their 75% tax rate.
Obozo bitches about tax breaks for the rich. Really? You idiots are the ones who wrote the code in the first place and you did it with loop holes that get you reelected. Wake up, America, and start kicking some butts out of office.
The same morons who don’t know clips from magazines conflate semi-automatic with automatic. This degree of ignorance in the government extends to economics as well.
Dosen’t really say anything giving them all kinds of wiggle room.
Most of them are very afraid to take a stand on any thing.
The current role of government is to facilitate the comission of crime. It is not the role of government to stop crime. Criminals have rights too.
The government's role is to do justice by assigning responsibility and meting punishment. Given this role it is only fitting that the government disarm law abiding citizens who seek their own, their family's and their community's protection.
After all, how can the government do justice when armed citizens take the law into their own hands by stopping crime in its commission?
Working to turn all of America into the shooting gallery that is Chicago...
Same here. It’s so fluffy.
They write one form letter on the topic, so that it can fit whatever type of letter they get from their constituents.
Then you slammed after that with junk email from them and their buddies.
Pretty soon, we're all going to have a choice to make.
I’m not at all worried about Todd Young.
It’s newly sworn “Obama Joe” Donnelly that we have to be terrified of.
In other words “I look forward to disarming you and all the other plebes in this country”.
good article - but hopefully the emotional phase will pass - and the logical will then begin...
Banning magazines of 10 rds or more is stupid...a .357 pistol can do just as much damage as a M4 rifle - and someone trained in speed loaders will have no problem — the only solution is to have a counter in place that can “face a gun with a gun!”
