City officials in Paragould, Arkansas, a town of 26,000, are recommending a plan that would enact martial law beginning in 2013.
The plan, purportedly a response to recent property and violent crimes, would send police into the streets with AR-15 rifles and authorize them to stop anyone in the street and demand to know what they are doing.
Mayor Mike Gaskill and Police Chief Todd Stovall announced in a town hall meeting last week that the program would begin in the new year:
[Police are] going to be in SWAT gear and have AR-15s around their neck, Stovall said. If youre out walking, were going to stop you, ask why youre out walking, check for your ID.
Were going to do it to everybody. They may not be doing anything but walking their dog but theyre going to have to prove it.
The mayor told local reporters that the citys crime statistics were high eno9ugh to justify the plan, which was cooked up without consulting the citys attorney...

If they cited any specifics, they’d get sued by the Justice Department for racial discrimination. That’s why they have to also go through the rigamarole of checking ID’s of joggers and everyone else they know is doing nothing wrong.
Looks like they did in 1918..
DOWNTOWN PARAGOULD , ARKANSAS

I think Arkansas needs to declare marital law.
I sent an email to their chamber of commerce letting them know that I would not be patronizing their businesses nor would I recommend anyone even think of traveling through town. I know that it’s not the fault of the C of C, but I figure that’s the best way to hit the tyrants in the Paragould Police Department—right in the wallets of their taxpayers.
And cops are instructed to ignore all muzzies but be particular attentive to those wearing Christian type jewelry.
Really?
Stovall announced his new “Street Crimes Unit” plan at a Dec. 13 town hall meeting, telling the citizens gathered that the armed patrols would start in 2013, with officers stopping citizens, demanding ID and charging those who refused to answer questions with obstruction of governmental operations. On Sunday, with the Internet beginning to take note of his idea, Stovall seemed to dial back his tone, issuing a statement via the Paragould PD website titled “Armed Patrol Clarifications” which said that officers wouldn’t harass citizens, and would not be carrying AR-15 assault rifles constantly while on foot patrol because it would be “impractical.”
“Many citizens, through various media outlets, have expressed a concern about the police ‘violating rights’ or ‘violating the Constitution,’ “ the statement said. “We have to abide by the same rules, regulations, and laws that our citizens do. We are not out to violate anyone’s rights. Once we have an area that shows a high crime rate or a high call volume, it is our duty and obligation to find out why this is occurring and what we can do to prevent the trend from continuing.”
this really isn’t satire?
Paragould, AR is hardly at the cross roads of anything, even by AR standards. Your letter to the Paragould Chamber of Commerce will not leave them quaking in their booties.
Well, maybe so, but it still might help. It just really pisses me off that this kind of crap is condoned and allowed.
What? These people have never seen a dog before?
Totally unacceptable bovine excrement that causes the leaves to stir.
LOL
It’s accidentally violating their rights...
And yet, when a cop gets hurt or killed, he is suddenly a hero. He’s a 15 year veteran of the force with a wife and kids and we’re all supposed to feel bad that he’s dead. Even if he’s an abusive asshole to whom the constitution is just a suggestion.
Honest, officer, I swear to you it is a dog!
“..and have AR-15s around their neck.”
I rather imagine that accuracy pretty much sucks, at that point.
Can we start teaching Rover to equate cops with fire hyrdants? At least he’ll get a bit of satisfaction before the cop shoots him. Whatever happened when police were there to serve and protect? Where did all the Andy Taylor’s go?
