Does Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi desire to become a dictator...or another Abraham Lincoln?

Did that question make you burst out laughing? If so, please be prepared for an even bigger laugh when you watch Atlantic editor Steve Clemons expend brain cells while struggling to figure out the answer to that question in his column. So laughable are the efforts of Clemons trying to come up with what to even slightly aware people is the obvious answer that you might need an oxygen mask due to an inability to catch a breath:

Look, nobody is claiming that the Union was based on initial full implementation of the ideal that “all men are created equal.” Obviously not. However, that ideal was always there, however imperfectly addressed.

Until the CSA explicitly pronounced that the Founders were wrong in their claim that “all men are created equal,” that the new CSA was founded on the cornerstone truth that some men aren’t equal, they are by nature slaves to the master race.

If I remember correctly the House passed a Constitutional amendment to ban any constitutional amendments to ban slavery, the Senate also passed it 2 days later and President Buchanan signed it the same day.

Lincoln was sworn in a day later. He apparently did not campaign against the Constitutional amendment.

Only 3 states ratified it, though. So nothing ever came of it, even though it was a huge deal to those in Congress in those few days.

I think he said he wouldn’t fight that amendment, but he didn’t have to apparently.

You may have fallen for Lincoln’s pet trick of pretending the Republic originated not with ratification of the Constitution, but rather in the foggy realm of the mystical cords of memory represented by the Declaration.

How very tricky of Lincoln!

Nobody else has ever thought this, which is why our national holiday is celebrated in June not July.
