Secede from the United States?
WTVA-TV ^ | November 13, 2012 | Robert Byers

FULTON, Miss. - The talk these days on many social media web sites like Facebook is a petition to secede from the United States and for states to peacefully create their own government.

We found many people who had signed the Mississippi petition like Brandy T from Saltillo, Irv C from Philadelphia and Michael A from Southaven.

Itawamba Community College Chairman of the Social Science Division Dean Burchfield said, "I think it's a movement of people who want to say they're not happy with the government."

The instructor of history doesn't put much stock in the online effort.

Burchfield said, "If a state wanted to secede, it would be more than just signature petitions. It would have to come from state leaders and people who would organize like conventions or whatever. But I don't see any state seceding."

The movement has gained the attention of some in the national media, enough for stories to be done.

The media is scoffing at these petitions. One ABC report mentioned a counter petition that demands signers of the succession petitions be deported.

Yeah, the underlying premises of that petition is actually frightening:

  1. That the government can unilaterally void citizenship, and therefore make the rights and privileges thereof completely conditional.
  2. That the mass deportation of [former] citizens is a good thing considering:
  3. the first amendment was enacted specifically to protect political speech, and
  4. the power to do so would easily become corrupted, bow long until it would be applied to any sort of political dissent?

We need precepts for a new government. Here they are:

Please. Before you secede, read the 10th Amendment to the Constitution and begin the impeachment of Justice Roberts for violating his oath to uphold and defend the US constitution from ALL ENEMIES foreign and DOMESTIC.

This must be the battle for the hearts of American conservatives, not secession.

Doesn't the Constitution provide that the states that want to secede needn't seek out permission from the government? Couldn't they just secede by force if necessary?
I'm not a Constitutional scholar; just posing the question. The only solutions I see to us wrestling our country from the grasp of the leftists is to "reset",either by revolution, or secession and possibly reuniting somewhere down the line.

If serious about this, and some are VERY, we should back the first state most likely do it.

Get the ball rolling ...

The country is evenly divided politically. This is unsustainable and also cruel to both the socialist and the conservative to live in forced cohabitation. Now is the time to make a geographic divide and allow the two sides somewhere to go to. Why is that so hard to understand? There are no shared common values to work with.

If there were a valid threat of states leaving, the other states wouldn’t be in such a rush to abuse individual states... i.e. not letting Alaska drill for their own oil.

I’m with you- what was so holy about “The Union” that it had to be preserved at the cost of thousands of lives?

What if the north had tried to get the south try to do something other than abolish slavery, like oh..say.. force them to buy health insurance ?

In my view it’s not even a Constitutional question. Once things get to that point, it’s really more a question of ...so what’re ya gonna do to make ‘em stay? In the 1860’s we saw one response. I personally don’t think history would repeat itself in that respect, but you never know.

The US Constitution is silent on secession. IMO the 10th amendment implies a defacto right but there are differing opinions. If you read the early writings of political leaders during ratification, if secession had been made unconstitutional in the it would have NEVER been ratified by the 13 states.

Hey now. I am in El Dorado County, Placerville and I wish we could secede from California and the USA. I hate it here.

Kick them all out....and then, what? Replace them with some more statist RINOs? Or maybe some more "Guam will tip over" loopy-loos? It's clear we can't get any good staunch conservatives elected to either house of Congress because of rampant voter fraud that propelled the likes of Al Franken and others into seats of power.

Secession is looking better and better to me every day.

I’m positive that some of the “national media” in 1775 were “scoffing” too.
