So sick of all these politicians and their messiah complexes. Get the problem fixed or STFU and step down. And i have to laugh at the child like sheep and drones saying "Obama looked so presidential!"
Really? Are some people so gullible, incompetent, and naive to still fall for these publicity stunts? He comes in for 1 hour - 1 hour - and then heads off to Vegas AGAIN for a fundraiser. Boy doesn't that jog my memory of September 12, 2012 as our embassy was in flames w the flag of Al Queada flying high and the ambassador and 2 Navy Seals dead. Wake up people - these politicians are all the same.
I'm sitting in the dark, listening to the radio by flashlight, scavenging for gas in order to get to work, and obama / bloomberg / christie are taking victory laps? Are you FNG KIDDING ME ? ? ? ?
And now BloomBUM wants to hold the marathon while Queens and Staten Island are a mess? How about hand rations to the runners to deliver to the stressed and strapped out homeowners?
Sorry for the rant - just really pissed off.
Stay safe everyone.
These include:
Moronic state laws in NJ preventing gas stations from selling gas that is refined out of state - even with this foolishness suspended, people who want to ship gas into NJ have no logistics, no existing credit relationships and there is no phone service in many areas to set it up.
Downed power lines and trees and residual flooding, as well as compromised bridges, make it much more difficult for trucks to negotiate their way into NJ. Anti-gouging laws prevent suppliers from charging higher prices to compensate for the lost time. So if you are an operator, you would prefer to send your trucks to places where they can make a quick round trip and charge a market price. Time is money.
(2) Where power is out, the pumps are not working. Few gas stations are equipped with emergency generators and no new generators are available anywhere in a hundreds-of-miles radius. The state government did not even have adequate generators stocked to run a sufficient number of shelters.
(3) The lack of power is definitely the central problem - but NJ union laws are preventing nonunion crews from joining in to work. And even if those laws were suspended, you can count on unions to sabotage.
(4) This whole situation has exposed a ton of structural rot that uninformed citizens have brought upon themselves.

Well, you could always go down to stay at The Mark with the Obambot 1%ers like Wintour, Jacobs et al or party with The Divine Miss M who seem to be coping quite nicely...
So did Marie Antoinette say, “ Let them hold a marathon”?
In all sincerity, I wish you the best and hope your ordeal ends soon.
There was no enthusiasm for obama before this happened, not he will get millions less votes from NY and NJ.
Imagine if he squeeked a EC victory and lost the pop vote by millions?
City living is mostly foreign to me.
The storm surge was the real problem with Sandy. If you weren’t in the areas flooded by the storm surge or the extreme winds on the coast, the storm was fairly ordinary. Other parts of the country suffer rains and high winds regularly.
In WA, 40 mph winds are normal for a winter storm with gusts to 60. You learn to cut down all tall trees near your house and have a back up generator if you have a sump pump in your basement. You keep flash lights and candles handy and extra gas for the generator and food on your shelves.
We once lost power for five days, with 90 mph winds, 15 degree temperatures and 15 inches of snow, topped with 2 inches of ice as the storm moved on, and burst water pipes. We survived without any help from the government.
Most of the area that was not impacted by the storm surge is back to normal, except for gas lines and shortages in the grocery stores.
If Obama has his way, electrical outages might become the new normal. So, get prepared.
Of course. Look at the 0 margin in Manhattan in the last election. Are the fools who voted for him the last time any less foolish four years later? If you know any 0 voters ask them just what was it he did in the last four years that they want to see more of done. Watch the puzzled looks as they try to answer.
A similar question was asked of a BF 0 supporter on TV and her answer was (trumpet fanfare) "We need to keep moving forward." The reporterette who asked this didn't follow up with "What do you mean by that?" The mid 20's WF who was asked why she voted for Romney answered something to the effect that R was the best bet at cutting the debt and getting the country out of the weak economy - I don't remember her exact words.
And now I hear dat de unions are turning away volunteers from non union states.
Gotta play the game doncha know?
Haven’t they figured out that’s his one talent? Looking presidential? That calm and measured demeanor?
It’s an empty shell.
Oh, all right. He wears a suit MUCH better than Chris Christie, or even a windbreaker.
Two talents.
Hang in there. Romney is on the way. I was going to donate to the Red Cross but maybe I’ll donate to some fellow FReeper directly instead.
The media was reporting for days the direction of the storm. How long does it take to get to a store to stock up on stuff, fill gas cans? Short of having your house slammed to the ground you’d have enough to weather the storm for days. For those who were in the path, you have a bugout bag set to go. It’s all in preparation.
LOL! Glad to hear you haven’t lost your feisty nature! :-)
I absolutely agree it is imperative to get dispose of the traitor in the White House by voting him out next Tuesday. I can identify with your committment to voting next week—no matter WHAT the situation. I feel the same way, and I know that there are legions of us that are like-minded.
I agree with everything you've said except calling that subset of Freepers "fake conservative". I suspect they're real conservatives. They're also a-holes.
I’m in SoCal here. Just stunned at the damage in NY and NJ and CT. I would be ranting too knowing the dire needs of the people and Bloomberg is going ahead with the marathon!!??? Diesal generators that could be put to better use than heat tents for some runners!!??? Stay safe, you all are in my prayers. We are Americans!!! We demand better than this from our elected officials.
I’m so sorry you are in the middle of this mess. I hope you get electric soon. Do you have food and water?
I’m praying for you guys.
Hopefully the vulnerabilities will be addressed before the country gets hit with an Iranian EMP attack, massive earthquake, etc.
Sounds like the free market would solve a lot of these problems if it was allowed to be in effect. It would allow for gas refined out of state, truckers and trucking companies who would be willing to do the extra work and time because they would be adequately compensated for it, and quick, efficient labor available to get the electricity back up.
In the meantime, it’s got to be frustrating. Are a lot of the power lines not buried? I suppose where it’s wall-to-wall people and buildings line burial isn’t even an option.
And even those who prepared by having a generator are dependent on their gas reserve holding out, if the gas stations can’t pump more gas.
As much as the green-energy people would like everybody to walk or bike to work, that just wouldn’t work with the distances people live from their workplace. And putting everybody’s egg in one basket, like subway or trains, makes the whole thing vulnerable in one fell swoop, either by “natural disasters” or sabotage.
This part of the country gets rain and high winds regularly. People are used to that. I'm in the Philly area and so I'm away from the coast and the storm surges and this was no ordinary storm here. We're used to having our power out for a day or two or even three, but many people in my area nowhere near the water or the storm surge won't have power until the middle of next week at the earliest. Fortunately, here in PA, our gas stations are operational. But some stores are still without power and there are still bare spaces on the grocery shelves.
I'm tired of everyone telling us how this storm was not bad. It was bad. The infrastructure in one of the most populated areas of the country has taken a hit.
You know, you're not the only Freeper to have stated this; but it's a pyrrhic victory even if it were to happen.
Even if the situation helps Romney win the overall popular vote, it won't make any difference in the electoral vote.
In 2008, Obama got almost 63% of NY votes, and 57% of NJ votes.
Of whatever % stay home due to flooding aftermath issues, that % is going to roughly effect GoP voters to the same degree it effects Dem voters.
IoW, while the turnout might be effected, and while Romney is likely to come closer to Obama than McCain did, the overall ratio is not likely to be altered all that much...even in NJ...
IN 2008 NJ had over 3.8 million voters...McCain got less than 42% of the 2008 vote in NJ...So Obama won 57-41% there (over 2.2 million voters to McCain's over 1.6 million voters...)
So, even if you depress the NJ vote by say...20%...you still have over 3 million NJ voters...
It makes no sense to say that the Dem vote will be "suppressed" by 20% in NJ; but that Republicans would turn out in the same numbers...which is what it would take for Romney to win NJ.
And NY? McCain barely got 36% of the votes in '08. 2 million, 752,000 votes...
Even if Romney got that many votes -- or even 3 million votes in NY, you'd have to have over 1.8 million NY Dem voters (who voted last time) not vote...
And to think that 3 out of 8 NY Dem voters who voted last time would not vote -- while Romney voters went to the polls in the same/slightly increased proportion as GoP votes in '08, isn't realistic.
Besides all of the above, only a limited % of precinct voting areas have been effected...
Actually, you sound pretty reasonable for someone in your position.
Stay safe and warm.
