Lincoln: An invented hero
National Post via Canada.com ^ | October 30, 2012 | Kevin Gutzman

The Abraham Lincoln of popular perception is a mythological figure. He has little to do with the actual 16th president.

Fiji Hill quoting Gutzman in post #9: "Nowadays, historians commonly call anyone who says that the Civil War was over states' rights any of several unsavory names."

Fiji Hill post #9: "That happens on this board's Civil War threads."

central_va post #116 addressing donmeaker: "Get the hell away from me you lunatic.
Stupidity like your is dangerous to the republic."

In reality, as we see in this example, nearly all the name-calling flows in the other direction -- from Neo-Confederates directed at defenders of our Free Republic.

By the way, does anyone here dispute that the "Free" in "Free Republic" has the same meaning as "free" in "free labor" and "free states"?
And yet those wishing to abolish the 14th Amendment claim to be champions of liberty?

Depends on what the issues were. Certainly if a small minority of Americans sought to peel off some states using illegal methods, that insurrection should and would be resisted. If the states in insurrection declared war on the US and fired on US forces performing their duty, sure, that would be grounds to put an acute end to the insurrection.

If separation was broadly agreed up, and conducted legally, that is, by amendment, federal legislation, or even as resolution to grievances brought by a federal case to the Supreme Court, then there would be no reason to resist separation.

Rather, I am one who refuses to permit thugs to destroy legitimate self government.

Look in the mirror to see the thug.

No, I actually believe in law and self government, with freedom a useful and necessary result of good policies.

By contrast, you seem to deny that the American people can govern themselves, to deny that Americans should be subject to laws, and to deny that it is important who gets elected, because bad laws would increase your sense of being persecuted.

Seems to me you are poorly read, and poorly educated. The good news is that ignorance is curable. I have hope for you.

Is it true you got your education on the Constitution from the online comic book version of L.Neil Smith’s “Probability Broach”? (available at “Big Head Press”)

The 14th has some astoundingly bad clauses.
Section 4.
The validity of the public debt of the United States [...] shall not be questioned.

Um, I'm sorry, but I did point out that they were conflations and fallacies. If the courts can get so many different things out of something as simple as the 2nd Amendment, how can something as big/complex as the 14th be anything but horrid?

Do you think the blacks that served in the CSArmy thought is was "all about slavery"?

A letter by a Federal officer:

Col. Giles Smith commanded the First Brigade and Col. T. Kilby Smith, Fifty-fourth Ohio, the Fourth. I communicated to these officers General Sherman's orders and charged Colonel Smith, Fifty-fourth Ohio, specially with the duty of clearing away the road to the crossing and getting it into the best condition for effecting our crossing that he possibly could. The work was vigorously pressed under his immediate supervision and orders, and he devoted himself to it with as much energy and activity as any living man could employ. It had to be prosecuted under the fire of the enemy's sharpshooters, protected as well as the men might be by our skirmishers on the bank, who were ordered to keep up so vigorous a fire that the enemy should not dare to lift their heads above their rifle-pits; but the enemy, and especially their armed negroes, did dare to rise and fire, and did serious execution upon our men. The casualties in the brigade were 11 killed, 40 wounded, and 4 missing; aggregate, 55. Very respectfully, your obedient servant,

D. STUART, Brigadier-General, Commanding.

Outside the slavery issue, the south had it exactly right of what the USA should have been.

The perpetual union of the articles of confederation created the people of the United States.

Even if that is so, nothing constrains the states to hold to the federal government established by the Constitution.

From the wikipedia summary:

That said, the ratification of the Constitution can be viewed as invalidation of the Articles of Confederation.

Oh so I did post something on that thread. Sandy did a bit of a number on the ol’ homestead here so checking my ‘’pings’’ hasn’t been a priority.

Please, you’re being ridiculous . You really think having to pay taxes makes living here like living in North Korea? I worked with a husband and wife who escaped North Korea years ago. The wife had no problem talking about what it was like, how eating rats was a ‘’delicacy’’. The husband wouldn’t open his mouth at all, he was still scared to talk, even living here in the US. You haven’t got a clue as to what it’s like and apparently no clue as to how good we have it here.

I believe withholding taxes were enacted during WW2 to fund the war effort and have never been rescinded. Certain taxes are indeed necessary, for the maintaining of the military for instance or state and local taxes for the police. But as for me, most I feel are unnecessary and do amounted to theft. Actually aside from the military if it were up to me everything that has the words “Department of’’ in front of it should be abolished. The Constitution never said anything about the need for or the legitimacy of, say, The Dept. of Education or Transportation.
