A new study released this past week has once again linked the consumption of processed foods to health complications, giving food safety advocates even more cause for concern. The April 10th publication of the Clinical Epigenetics Journal reported a link between high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and autism in the United States. According to the study, the rise in autism rates "is not related to mercury exposure from fish, coal-fired power plants, thimerosal, or dental amalgam but instead to the consumption of HFCS.
The study, led by former FDA toxicologist and whistleblower Renee Dufault, found that a deficiency of zinc, triggered by the consumption of HFCS and other processed foods, interferes with the bodys ability to eliminate toxins such as mercury and pesticides.
High fructose corn syrup has long been suspected of having an adverse impact on health and has been purportedly linked to obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and liver disease. The fructose-laden ingredient has even been reported to facilitate the growth of cancer cells.
Dufault made news in 2009 with another study (which was referenced in these new findings), also linking high fructose corn syrup to mercury. Many HFCS proponents and some in the autism community will immediately (and predictively) discount these new findings, but regardless, they still warrant further research.
With autism rates now at a mind-blowing 1 in 88, there are many who are desperately looking for a definitive cause and a silver bullet theory. Whether or not there is something to these new findings remains to be seen, but we must not give up on our quest for the truth.
OK so....what’s the mechanism?
Interesting would be to know the autism rates in Western Europe....where sugar is still used in products instead of HFCS like in the US and Canada.
Let’s see...
Exhibit A. “The study, led by former FDA toxicologist...”
Exhibit B. “With autism rates now at a mind-blowing 1 in 88, there are many who are desperately looking for a definitive cause...”
Exhibit C. The countless normal children who got a vaccine and began showing autism symptoms soon after.
Hmmmm... tough one.
If you eat fresh food, including meat, poultry, fish, fruits and vegatables rather than canned processed food, you can eliminate most HFCS from your diet.
When canning your own produce, use cane sugar rather than HFCS.
Sounds like it causes a lack of zinc which causes mercury and other metals to accumulate in the body. My wife and I have long suspected processed foods as a possible culprit in all this. I won’t go into personal experience but our son is just fine.
“...interferes with the bodys ability to eliminate toxins such as mercury”
Mercury, as in the mercury in vaccines?
Oh, no, not THAT mercury. /sarc
So why is autism so prevalent among the children of really smart people, many of whom are health food nuts? If it were HFCS, you’d think the trailer parks would be full of autistic kids, where sodas often get drunk at every meal. But that’s not where the uptick is.
The vaccine study and the doctor who did it that caused that furor were proven to be frauds.
I don’t know about autism, but I had some persistent headaches for years until I gave up soda, which has high fructose corn syrup. The headaches stopped a couple days later and I have not had one since.
And how does HFCS cause a lack of zinc is my question?
An autism diagnosis means money, which is why the definition of autism has been broadly expanded in recent years.
Mercury is everywhere in the environment. It’s even in fish. Maybe canned tuna causes autism?
Not sure.
I just took a cold shower.
The molecular-biologist part of me shriveled...
Cheerios
Amish have an autism rate of 1 per 15,000. Everyone on average is 1 per 150.
Fructose increases the rate of iron absorption through the gut. Increased iron in brain reduces insulin sensitivity and reduces the rate of amino acid absorption into the brain neurons. Vertebrate neonates need to absorb sufficient glutamate into neurons to initiate the excitotoxin apoptosis in excess brain cells. Autism kids have 67% more brain cells than normal adults. The excess brain cells create the “white noise” that interferes with the kids ability to function.
I call BS.

I agree with that assessment. Much the same as the way they have been lowering and lowering what they deem to be the “good” cholesterol levels, down to what is it now, something like 120?
Even though study after study show there are millions and millions of totally healthy individuals with cholesterol in the 240-280 range.
No doctor will make a dime if he can convince you you are healthy.
BUT!!!...
I tend to think that even by older standards, autism has indeed increased. And I don’t mean mild or borderline cases.
