Taliban gunmen shoot 14-year-old girl activist

MINGORA, Pakistan — Fourteen-year-old Malala Yousufzai was admired across a battle-scarred region of Pakistan for exposing the Taliban's atrocities and advocating for girls' education in the face of religious extremists. On Tuesday, the Taliban nearly killed her to quiet her message.

A gunman walked up to a bus taking children home from school in the volatile northern Swat Valley and shot Malala in the head and neck. Another girl on the bus was also wounded.

Malala began writing a blog when she was just 11 under the pseudonym Gul Makai for the BBC about life under the Taliban, and began speaking out publicly in 2009 about the need for girls' education — which the Taliban strongly opposes. The extremist movement was quick to claim responsibility for shooting her.

"This was a new chapter of obscenity, and we have to finish this chapter," Taliban spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan by telephone......

Marines carry boy across finish line after his prosthetic leg breaks during triathlon

Pensacola Beach, Florida — During the 2012 Sea Turtle Triathlon in Pensacola, Marines helped carry a young boy over the finish live after his prosthetic limb broke.

The boy, 11-year old Ben Baltz of Valparaiso, Florida, was diagnosed with bone cancer in his right leg, his fibula and his tibia had to be removed, according to CNN iReport. He walks with a mechanical knee and a prosthetic walking leg, which he switches out when he plays sports.

On Sunday, Ben competed in the Sea Turtle Kids Triathlon in Pensacola. He had completed the 150-yard swim, 4-mile bike ride and half of the one-mile run when a screw on his leg came loose and his prosthetic leg broke in half.

As the boy lay on the ground, Private First Class Matthew Morgan picked up the boy and put him on his shoulders. Surrounded by his fellow Marines, Matthew carried Ben on his back so he could finish the race......

To be fair...there have been a lot of protests in Pakistan over the shooting of the young students...

Which I admire.
