Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson says he is leaning toward blocking the use of voter ID for casting ballots in the upcoming election.
Its a difficult issue, Simpson observed. On the one hand, we have a natural desire to ensure that only eligible voters cast ballots. On the other hand, no law is perfect and there is a chance that a legitimate voter could be disenfranchised.
Simpson said he will likely bar the ID requirement because, I think it is better to let a thousand ineligible voters cast a ballot than to deny one legitimate voter his right to vote. He says he reached this conclusion after he remembered that even ineligible voters are people. And should real people be denied the right to participate in the selection of their rulers based on something as flimsy as their lacking the appropriate paperwork?
In related news, in a test of potential identity fraud, federal investigators working for the Government Accountability Office (GAO) were able to get fraudulent drivers licenses in all three states where they tried. Apparently, if youve got a moderately plausible counterfeit ID you can dupe state licensing clerks into issuing you a drivers license, the report said. The US Department of Homeland Security was also chided by investigators for failing to tell states how to carry out key parts of the 2005 Real ID law. Attorney General Eric Holder argued that the report shows the futility of trying to enforce voter ID laws. Whats the sense of having a law thats do easy to get around?

Another good one John.
That idiot should not be a judge.
John, you’re going to catch your limit with this one.
My blood pressure was going up. Then I saw the word ‘satire’. I’m OK now.
How about if they allow voters without ID to cast provisional paper ballots that are held until the identity can be verified. The problem with voting in PA is in the computers, it’s not on paper. If they made people show any kind of ID, picture or no picture, they couldn’t put more votes in the machine than voters walking through the door.
Actually this judge upheld the law the first time round. The State Supreme Court sent it back to him with an order to reconsider and a list of instructions so ominous, they practically ordered him to overturn himself.
Where he is being sneaky is I think he is going to wait until 72 hours before the election to issue his ruling.
Yes. It’s annoying. He does it on purpose to get clicks on his craptire.
Why not also video record all doors and exits at the polls?
Those are two simple solutions that don't mandate that anyone go buy a government ID. No fuss, no muss, no lawsuit! Only politicians can come up with ideas that lead to so many lawsuits and inefficiencies.
PA Ping!
If you want on/off the PA Ping List, please freepmail me. Thanks!
Exactly, we need to stop electing people that appoint these morons.
So I have a compromise for the judge - no ID’s but anyone caught voting twice or illegally will be shot on site!
There!
