IQ estimates by intended college major via SAT scores

Assuming the mean IQ of SAT test-takers included in a report by the College Board to be 103*, the estimated average IQ of students by intended college major follow. Good point

But even so, that still seems very low. If you’re going to be accepted by an engineer school, you’d have to graduate high school with decent enough grades. It takes a bit of brain power to do that, which would imply those being accepted would be smarter than these implied IQ’s.

Assuming the SAT scores are still relatively correlating with IQ scores, and I think we all agree that kids today are less well educated than times past, it’s a reflection of the lower quality of education most are receiving today.

104. Poorly educated and minority doesn’t mean unintelligent.

Graduate high school with D's (unwarranted bias against science fiction, roller hockey, and hominid reproductive biology), ace the ASVAB, go to a school where they actually teach you stuff... the rest is history.

There is more than one way to skin a cat. ;)

Disregard. You and others filled in the blanks. The brilliance of these people is ASTOUNDING.

First, to your claim that a quarter of our kids don’t graduate from high school:

“In 2008, 22 percent of Hispanic 18- to 24-year-olds were not enrolled in high school and lacked a high school diploma or equivalent. The corresponding percentages for non-Hispanic whites were 6 percent, blacks were 13 percent and Asians were 4 percent.”

http://www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/education/cb11-106.html

And:

“The percentage of high school dropouts among 16- through 24-year-olds declined from 11.8 percent in 1998 to 7.4 percent in 2010 (source).”

http://nces.ed.gov/fastfacts/display.asp?id=372

The racial demographics for our full school population:

White and Asian: 62%

Black and Hispanic: 38%

http://www.census.gov/prod/2011pubs/p20-564.pdf

You can argue with IQ scores if you want, but Blacks and Hispanics score significantly lower on them than Whites and Asians, and almost 2 out of 5 of our school kids is Black or Hispanic.

I’ll wager the average Freeper is smarter than most of these people... I have never found a brighter bunch than the freeps.

There is always someone here who knows stuff. Just hang around and you'll get to discuss almost everything. Some of the smarty sites are pretty boring usually but there are some righteous nasty flame wars.

“Or equivalent” is the key. Students with GEDs do NOT get into selective colleges without a lot of special circumstances.

And whatever the demographics are, the average IQ is what the average IQ is.

Assuming the SAT scores are still relatively correlating with IQ scores,

Some HIQ societies don't accept SAT tests taken after 2005 does not correlate to IQ. Maybe take the 'Chitling Test'.

There is a 4 year old in Great Britain with a tested IQ of 159. She’s right up there with Einstein and Stephen Hawking.

“Bad base presumption, that the average IQ of SAT takes is only 103. The unintelligent don’t go to competitive colleges that require SATs. 1 in 4 Americans don’t graduate HS at all, and only half that do take the SATs.”

Bears repeating.

I’m way above this curve. 139-142, depending on the test. I’ve been as high as 160, but I consider that an outlier.

I score in the same range but never have hit 160:) BTW, I have never obtained a degree although I have had some college in electronics.

That’s interesting. I wonder if the ‘new GRE’ is less so correlated as well.

It’s actually easier for the very young to score very high on IQ tests.

Who said anything about students with GEDs going to selective colleges? I was commenting on our overall student body having a relatively low average IQ.

You posited that 25% of students dropped out of high school, but I gave you a recent statistic that it is only 7.4%.

You cannot gather IQ scores from an SAT test.

End of argument.

The modern librarian has to know how all media formats work, as well as, how to organize information so it’s readily accessible by a Joe Schmo.

You just described Google.
