My dad said he was big and beefy with butchers hands. He could take a joke but was uncompromising if boundaries were crossed. Several times dad or one of his mates would be dragged by the ear to their home and parents informed in no uncertain terms of the appropriate transgression. No parent argued with Ginger his word was law Ginger WAS the law.
Ginger exuded authority and never walked away from trouble. He had great physical presence but dad never recalled him actually hitting anyone
..except when some wife had been used too often as a punchbag by her beer sodden husband or uncle then there followed the same ritual.

Heh, one of my bobby friends was describing how he caught a 14 year old drunken boy lying about his age on the train (he’s in the BTP), and tapped him on the head with a notebook saying ‘ahh you’re lying then!’ and he went ‘Ow! Thats assault!’ But when he complained to his mum at the station, his mum asked my friend why he hadn’t hit him harder...
Having said that, it is unfortunate, but a lot of coppers would abuse the privelage. Its already giving reasonable people with common sense carte blanche to do this, but then you’d also have to deal with the thugs, bullies and wanna be fascists imposing their own little reigns of terror on the streets, and the police ranks has more than its fair share of utter front bottoms, as many bobbies would themselves admit...
Ginger?
was his middle name Sue?
‘Ginger’ is commonly known in the US as ‘Red.’
Redheads in the UK are known as ‘gingers.’
I thought it was his real name. heh
put yer trousers on .. yer nicked !
Brute force in the service of common sense is an unalloyed good.
Among some mostly older people, ‘gingers’ are held to be of inferior stock; a prejudice similar to those against Irish, blacks, Poles, etc.
A return to that type of police work — by that type of policeman — would result in a great deal of good today.
I guess King David from the old days would be viewed the same since he was a ginger.
Do gingers have souls?
(great commentary here.)
