The people interviewed here in 2008 said that they agreed with McCain’s positions on the issues, but that they would be voting for Obama anyway. If that’s not because of racism, then I’d love to hear some other explanation:

If you’re from Squirrel Hill you are no doubt familiar with the Cyril Wecht effect.
Wecht is a doctor, lawyer, politician. By all accounts a brilliant man. And he has managed to make more enemies than almost any other living soul in Allegheny County.
Largely due to personal abrasiveness.
To the point where about the only way a Republican ever wins countywide office is when his Democrat opponent is Cyril Wecht.
He has alienated so many in his own party they actually cross over and vote Republican just to spite him.
Similar dynamics are in play with McCain on the ballot.

“White Guilt” is the purest form of racism. It stems from an innate sense of superiority of being white over other races. Since the person knows this is not what they are supposed to feel, they try to bury their racism with guilt.
It was a positive racism. People were bamboozled by the clean speaking, articulate “uniter”. I have friends who have been life long republicans..never voted democrat who voted for Obama. They have apologized to me and others for nearly 4 years now and can’t wait to set their consciences straight.
I’ve found that if you want to get an apoplectic rise out of black liberals, tell that that “Obama was reparations. All of it”, and when he is out of office, black people will no longer get any special treatment, only what they earn.

While I am quite familiar with Wecht, I never thought that he was hated so much that a Republican could beat him. Based on bumper stickers, I didn’t know there were any Republicans in this city.

I see your point. I’ve always looked at it another way; perhaps yours is more valid.
I look at such people as sniveling pantywaists who seem to “feel” (never “think”) that since the White Man, earlier in our history, had slaves....well, by God, it is incumbent upon us to kiss black ass forever to atone. It’s ridiculously stupid, it’s (as you pointed out) condescending, it flies in the face of historical context and logic, and ensures ongoing racial inequality.
Lord forgive me for how much I loathe such morons.
