Hello FRiends,

Mrs. Dog needs a new pair of knees so I wondering if anyone has experience or advice on medical tourism to Mexico. She does not want to go to Asia and she's not excited about TJ but Monterrey is on the table.
Thanks,

Atomic Dog

I thought Central America (Guatamala or Honduras) was the best places for that. I think Jamaica is also getting into this field. I’m not sure I’d trust Mexico.

My wife got new knees in Minneapolis, both done at the same time... and she was up and walking on the new ones within l8 hours of surgery. Nothing like the good old USA.

My understanding from living on the Canadian border is that India is the place to go for medical tourism.

Two at the same time? Do you two know what you’re in for?

Speaking as an ER nurse, my advice to you is DON'T, and here is why:

1) ERs see far more postoperative complications in patients who have had surgery done in Mexico than we do in patients who have had surgery done in the US.

2) If she develops a postoperative complication that requires surgical intervention (such as prosthesis rejection, joint failure, wound infection, or osteomyelitis), pack your bags and fly down to Mexico to get it fixed. No American surgeon in his right mind is going to touch it.

So, in short: Going down to Mexico for surgery is certainly cheaper, but you should be prepared to stay down there for at least six weeks post-op to make sure that should any complications arise, the surgeon who did the work will be the one to fix the problem.

If you can't afford to do that, then you're better off just getting the work done in the good old US of A.

Costa Rica and Panama are supposed to be two of the best places.

We lived in Japan for 14 years. The medical care there was top notch and affordable. Mrs. Vigilanteman had cataract surgery in both eyes for less than 1/20th of what it would have cost us stateside.

We were careful to get references even there.

"Costa Rica and Panama are supposed to be two of the best places."

There is a Johns Hopkins affiliate in Panama City that is reported to be up to US standards and certifications and they do joint replacements.

If the infection doesn’t get you, the kidnappers will. Monterrey is in the middle of the cartel war. I’d say NO.

Agreed. Nothing like the USA. If you're going to have to have both done, get them done at the same time. That way you only have to go in once and recover once. If you don't, then you might chicken out on having the second done. BIL had them both done and was up off the gurney heading to the bathroom by himself before they got him back to his room after surgery. The worst part was the physical therapy afterward.

Stay away from Mexico! Personal experience. You’re at the mercy of every petty official that has his hand out for mordida.

I am very familiar with Mexico. I would not recommend going there for any reason.

Funny because it rings true.
