Could Texas once again become the Republic of Texas?
Without question, the Nov. 6 election will be a do-or-die, make-or-break, Rubicon-crossing event. If the presidential election goes one way, we get a do-over. Well be given the opportunity to take the first step on a long, arduous journey back to our political and economic roots. If it goes the other way, federalism and balance of power will continue to be edged out by an overreaching federal government and an imperial presidency. Socialism will have an unbreakable hold on the economy, and a centralized government, rather than a free market, will determine business winners and losers.

“This is the Chief Justice Justice of the United States BEFORE the Civil War even started. “
Chief Justice’ sometimes get it wrong and sometimes wrong
in a really bad way. Roberts? Who’s to say Taney wasn’t
as big a quack or compromised?
You’re right. Some people claim that the Civil War proved that secession is illegal. Whether one was in favor of the North or the South, all that war actually “proved” is that a state or group of states can be militarily forced to continue being a part of a group. Superior strength does not prove morality or legality as any citizen of the former Soviet Union can attest.
Good point....yet Texas won every battle on it’s own soil, so its hard to say it was crushed. In fact it became a haven for southerners like my ancestors, who came here to flee the carpetbaggers, to get lost in the vastness of the state....hardly crushed.
I don’t think so. wars aren’t fought like they were in 1860. The US didn’t win Korea, or Vietnam, and hasn’t won Afghanistan yet. Random guerrilla attacks would be the style, and most likely after a time what is left of the bankrupt USA would call it off. That, of course is just my opinion. It would all be a new chess game, that is for sure. When things get bad enough people will rise to the occasion.
“Texas would have control over the nukes that are here, anyway.”
They would nuke us before we ever got control of them. That
is if Obama doesn’t destroy them first. If there are any
nukes left in Texas anyway.
South Carolina et al seceded over the perceived long-term
ramifications of the election of Lincoln. Plus, Lincoln’s
election was the cherry on the icing. At this point there
isn’t even any icing on the cake.
Not close to being comparable for a few reasons.
That’s kind of what I’ve been trying to say, you said it better
“...and it was illegal for the United States to secede from Great Britain. Our Declaration of Independence is very clear.”
LaserJock kicks A$$. Good one.
Brewer is from Arizona, not Texas.
Some will stay, others will move on to find their imaginary utopia somewhere else, finally being convinced it won’t happen in Texas;>)
No.
If obama wins all 57 states need to band together and secede...
The Constitution did NOT prohibit secession, and since we have the 10th Amendment, states DID, and DO, have the RIGHT to leave the Union. What one justice says doesn’t change that.
Just for a moment, lets agree that it would be illegal. Wasn’t it also illegal for the US to leave Britain? Yet it was done, and it could, and should, be done again.
I believe it is legal for a state to leave the union, from reading our Constitution, but even if it’s not legal, I believe it should still be done.
“But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.”
“So, when Texas secedes, what happens to the leftist onclave called Austin and the University of Texas?”
The same thing that happened to the the loyalist enclave of New York City when the United States seceded from Britain.
There would be damn few who shoot at fellow citizens. The soldiers of this nation are OUR sons and daughters, the commies don’t generally let their offspring serve. I have kin in the military right now, and it would /should make you feel pretty good to know how they think. There are a few loons there, but not many.
Me too. If hussein steals the election (no way he can win with his record, he’ll have to cheat to win), and TX or any other State secedes - I will move there in a heartbeat. That which hussein rules will no longer be America.
“I thought the Civil War effectively ended the right of states to secede.”
Power ended the right of states to secede. When the US falls apart, it will be over failure of central power, either actual power or will.
It will be a long time before Texas can secede without war. The tax revenue from Texas is too big for the folks in Washington to surrender. The Gulf ports are too valuable. And, Texas is too close to the mouth of the Mississippi river, which remains the United States’ most valuable natural asset.
The logic of Lincoln’s response to the Mexican attempt to occupy Texas during the Civil War still holds, except that Texas, in addition to its geopolitical location, now generates huge tax revenue.
Everything is negotiable at gunpoint. What kind of relationship do you have if you are not free to leave? That is slavery, not freedom.
We’d have to secure our borders. Keep yankees out...like from Oklahoma.
