Often the most wondrous things come in the smallest of packages.
Today, the hope of an Arab Spring is fast becoming the despair of a nuclear winter. We’re turning our backs to the only true ally we have in the Middle East, only to make alliances with tenuously formed governments. The United Nations is more concerned with wealth redistribution and political correctness than it is for its chief priority -- peacekeeping. In the void, it’s important to remember a time when a child stepped in to do the job the UN couldn’t, or wouldn’t.
Her target? Yuri Andropov, the general secretary of the Soviet Union’s Communist Party, and a hard-liner.

A touching story for sure.
I can’t romanticize someone who was used as a propaganda tool.
Her letter would have never seen the light of day in Russia had it not been Andropov’s intent.
That was very touching.
She was only 10. I think she humanized Americans in the eyes of Soviet citizens and politicians, and provided a reminder of what was at stake in the event of a nuclear war.
I was sad to find out what eventually happened to this innocent little girl whose idealism touched the citizens of both blocs...
Children can melt even the coldest of hearts.
