First of all, being brought up in a certain way, doesn't --automatically -- make you as such. True, Joseph Stalin studied to be a Catholic priest in his youth, yet, as soon as he proclaimed his Communism, he showed he is NOT Christian - any more. The same with those 'mostly Christians,' or atheist secular Jews vs the religious and conservatives.

Well, there was plenty of “Liberation Theology” preaching, esp. in the Catholic Church. But they, and their heretical teachings, have been mostly suppressed.
And Protestants have issues with PCUSA, the Episcopals, the upper councils of the Methodists, etc.
The “Religious Left” isn’t really large, but it does have a fair amount of authority in some denominations.
