A new poll shows Mitt Romney, who is locked in a prolonged GOP nomination fight, with lagging approval ratings, raising questions about his strength in a likely November match-up with President Obama.
Half of those surveyed hold unfavorable views of the GOP front-runner, a new Washington Post/ABC News poll released Wednesday finds.
In the poll, 50 percent of all surveyed and 52 percent of registered voters held unfavorable opinions of Romney. Thirty-four percent hold positive views on Romney, the lowest for any leading presidential contender in Post/ABC polls dating back to 1984.
The poll also finds that Romneys unfavorability tops Obamas highest unfavorability rating in the poll's history.
Adding to Romney's challenge in a potential general-election fight, by comparison, Obama holds a 53 percent favorability rating and a 43 percent unfavorable mark, according to the survey.
Obama is also up with independents, 50 percent of whom hold favorable views to 46 percent unfavorable.
But Romney lags among that key group, with 35 percent of independents viewing him favorably to 52 percent unfavorable.
Among voters who identify themselves as moderates, Obama holds a 61 percent to 34 percent positive edge, while Romney is seen unfavorably by more. Forty-eight percent of centrists have a negative view of Romney, to 35 percent favorable.
The poll also shows Obama rallying his base better than Romney...

If he wants them to go up - let him go to the Party he belongs with - the ‘RAT party! He’s an imposter! Kick him to the curb with the rats.
A few months ago, the GOPers were scoring very highly vs. Obama for independents... looks like it’s all in reverse now.
Ah, what could’ve been...
But that all changed pretty recently. They were slamming him pretty hard today. He's pretty obviously the GOP nominee at this point, so the Left feels that they have achieved that important goal. Now that the cards are dealt, they have turned on him and they are now playing to win.
I haven't seen a lot of the "Mormons are crazy and scary" talk yet, but I have no doubt that all the major news outlets are working on those stories.
Way to go, GOP-e! I’d post what I think of these Eastern Establishment SOBs, but propriety holds me back.
Look for a similar expression from Myth.
That's an ominous sign... we're reaching back to Walter "One-State" Mondale.
Damn, this is not going to be a pretty sight.
Obama holds a 53 percent favorability rating

Lol...yeah, right...
Isn't that the problem, Romney does not have a base. Romney has a collection of apparatchiks, careerists, and sheeple but he does not have any broken glass Republicans. He has folks who vote on the basis of a TV commercial.
One more piece of evidence that Romney's vaunted electability is synthetic.
I hope his meeting with Newt Gingrich was about more than just logrolling, I hope he genuinely asked Newt how to mobilize a national movement and call it a political campaign.
I’d like to see the methodology used before I take this as gospel.
I don’t trust these polls. Not one bit.
The Mormon stuff will be mostly farmed out to a thousand lefty bloggers, mostly along the “Mormons are raaaacists” lines.
The major Dem hack sites will concentrate more on the “ultra rich guy out of touch with the common folk” and flip-flopper/opportunist themes.
Obama is so bad that very few candidates the GOP could have nominated would lose to him in 2012, but the establishment found one who is guaranteed to get his clock cleaned.
Romney will win even fewer electoral votes than even Mondale.
Wait until he starts highlighting his liberal views after securing the nomination
“METHODOLOGY This ABC News/Washington Post poll was conducted by landline and cell phone March 21-25, 2012, among a random national sample of 1,016 adults. Results have a margin of sampling error of 3.5 points. The survey was produced for ABC News by Langer Research Associates of New York, N.Y., with sampling, data collection and tabulation by SSRS/Social Science Research Solutions of Media, Pa.”
His own party doesn’t even want to vote for him, he has no base.
What I’m looking for is percentage of democrats, percentage of republicans, percentage of independents.
Conservative Republicans have been once more outmanuvered. We have been sold a man that cannot defeat “The Divine One.” The Republican elite do not care if “The Divine One” is re-elected as they are focusing on retaining the House and capturing the Senate. By controlling the House and Senate they control the distribution of moneys. Money is all that matters!
