David Dreier (R-San Dimas) announces he will not seek reelection. (Rules committee chairman)
The Daily Bulletin ^ | 02/29/2012 | Neil Nisperos, Staff Writer

Rep. David Dreier, R-San Dimas, announced today he will not seek reelection

The rules committee chairman made the announcement on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.

"Mr. Speaker, I have chosen to leave Congress at the end of this term," Dreier said. "I take the unusual step of announcing this from the floor of Congress for two reasons. First, this is where my fellow Californians sent me to represent them. Second, I am a proud institutionalist, and I believe that this institution is as great as it has ever been."

Dreier currently represents the 26th District, which has its local office in San Dimas and extends west beyond Pasadena from La Crescenta and La Canada Flintridge, east to Upland and Rancho Cucamonga.

After redistricting, Dreier's home office is now in a less favorable 32nd District with a majority of voters registered as Democrats. The new district is bordered by Duarte in the North, El Monte in the West, Industry in the south, and La Verne to the East.

"It has been an amazing honor to represent you, the people of the San Gabriel Valley and the Inland Empire," Dreier said. "I feel I should give someone else a chance. I was 25 years old when I won the nomination. I've been doing this a long time. I am now 59 ... There are other things I want to do."

This along with Jerry Lewis (R-Redlands) really hurt California's mostly inland Republican Congressional delegation. These were the two longest serving members. The Democrats gaming of California redistricting is nearly complete. I hope other states with majority Republicans drawing the boundaries are gerrymandering the Hell out their Districts, because there are going to be significant losses in California.

rules committee chairman..........like the Maytag repair guy.....no one in DC has any balls to enforce any laws or back the Constitution.....so the need isn’t there.

An articulate voice for conservatism with an ACU lifetime of 91%. This is not good for California Republicans.

That’s 2 Republicans who have announced they are retiring. The party that has a bunch of retirees going up to the election is the normally party that loses the election. Are we looking at another All Democrat government? If that happens forget about europeanization. We will go way past Europe and most of us will be wondering whey we didn’t get out when we could.

He calls himself an institutionalist.

We don’t need more of that.

Dreier got a raw deal in redistricting, and it was clear from the get-go that he had nowhere to run for reelection. I wish he would run for the Senate against Feinstein, since he’s conservative enough that he’d be the most conservative Senator from CA in over 50 years but has the type of demeanor that won’t scare off moderates in California. Alas, that’s not gonna happen (he doesn’t have the fire in the belly to run statewide).

Don’t worry. You will get a Democratic elected by Hispanics from El Monte, and Azusa instead. Basically, the worst of the worst since as long as they have D after their name, they will elect anyone. Think Maxine Waters.

He’s not even 60 yet. Drier is a John McCain kind of Conservative. He is completely establishment and tries to sound like he is a cool guy on Dennis Miller and Hugh Hewitt. He and the House Leaders have done nothing since the 2010 elections, yet everyone seems to never mention the impotent GOP House when discussing current electoral woes. Rush said, “Boehner is Obama’s Lifeline” and he was right.

“I've been doing this a long time. I am now 59 ... There are other things I want to do.”

Translation: “ I have been doing this for a long time. Now I want to cash in and make some real money. After 45 years in Congress, I have full access to the Capital and all the members of Congress and I know the ones that are open to bribes. So let the "Lobbying" begin.”

Just what did he do to prevent the democRats from pushing through this disastrous health care bill?

As has been posted earlier. I guess his position is just not needed.

Don’t overreact. When the map was released this outcome was a certainty. A guy who has flirted with retirement as much as Dreier wasn’t gonna run against a fellow incumbent Republican in the 31st (which was really his only option)

A while back I did my amateur analysis of the CA races.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2756014/posts#13

We have 14 seats that should be safe, down from the 19 rather safe seats we have now. I pegged 3 more as probable wins, for 17. That would be minus 2 seats provided we don’t win any of the other many competitive seats, which we could.

If Obama wins the state by 20+ points again that would not be good.

I’m predicting that this may be the decade CA’s growth starts to diminish and by 2023, will start to lose House seats. It seems they barely held their 53rd seat this time, the first time they failed to gain any seats. It’s appalling to imagine a 17R-36D or 14R-39D delegation, with virtually all Ds being Stalinist parasites.

I think you’re right. Taxpayers have been fleeing in droves since the 1990’s and the population its been gaining are overrepresented by what one could call tax-receivers. The high cost, the traffic jams, the lousy schools, the crime (above the national average), and the stifling regulation is just too much for even many liberal taxpayers.

Bad news is that those idiot leftists don’t recognize that their politics have turned the places they’re fleeing into hellholes. They $hit up their nests and move on to $hit in others.

Early money was on them losing a seat this time, I was surprised they didn’t, and that Montana didn’t gain 1.

Dreier is what one would call a "lifelong batchelor," who was supposedly "outed" several times but in a quiet way (not with national exposure, as with the rumors of Mark Foley before the email expose).

When his district was solidly Republican, this never became an issue. If, however, he were forced to run against a Democrat in a Democrat district, this would become the issue on Day One.

It’s an open secret that he is gay and lives with his Chief of Staff. He’s still an okay Congressman.

Issues don’t matter in democrat districts, neither do character. Just the letter after the name. The district his home is now, the democrat could be a tax cheat who beats up hookers and he’d still easily beat the best Republicans.

Unfortunately, even if Montana reclaimed its second seat, most likely the western/mountains district would go rodent and only the eastern plains would be GOP.

I have heard the rumors about Dreier for years, but didn’t know that they were more than rumors. But if he’s indeed gay, I guess that for a while there he had as hot of a beard as a middle-aged congressman could find: Bo Derek.

BTW, seeing Dreier referred to as a Republican from San Dimas, I came up with what I think would make the best possible (G-rated) headline/subheadline combo for his retirement:

“David Dreier to Retire Due to Redistricting:
San Dimas Republican Meets His Waterloo”

10 points for the first to figure out why I find that funny.
