Rick Santorum Has A Women Problem. But Does Mitt Romney Have A Problem With Men? By Mike Smithson February 26th, 2012
Since a lacklustre performance in the Republican candidates' CNN debate on Wednesday night, Rick Santorum has seen his poll numbers fall ahead of Tuesday's Michigan and Arizona primaries. In surveys carried out after the event, Mitt Romney improved his position against Santorum by an average of about 4%.
This has led the electoral and polling expert at the New York Times, Nate Silver, to project that Santorum now has just a 33% chance of winning Michigan and only an 11% chance of triumphing in the winner-takes-all Arizona primary.
But there was amidst the general gloom one survey of likely Arizona primary voters which had Santorum improving on his position ten days earlier. The American Research Group put him just four points behind in the state, suggesting that he might have a fighting chance.
An aspect of the polling detail, however, highlighted a trend that we have seen in many surveys during the past month: Santorum is doing reasonably well with male voters but he is miles behind with women.
Thus in the ARG survey, Santorum led Romney by 43% to 32% with the men in the sample, while Romney led Santorum by 47% to 26% with the women.
Gender gaps are not unusual in political polling but it is rare to see one so large. This looks as though Santorum's opposition to contraception and his traditional views on the role of women is having a big impact.
The contraception issued featured strongly in Wednesday's debate.

I like Cicero’s analysis and may explain the women vote as it relates to Santorum and Gingrich. I also think the Mormon female vote (and perhaps the male vote) is 100% for Romney.
Newt NEVER urged Santorum to quit. NEVER. Media urged Newt to comment on Santorum staying in the race. No matter what Newt said, it was intrepreted by media that he was calling for him withdraw.
“Santorum is a loser, and lose he will in Michigan as well as Arizona.”
I hope not. I don’t like him, but I detest Bishop Willard.
” Newt would rather see Romney nominated than withdraw. So would Saint Rick. “
One certainty is that Romney wins if Newt pulled out.
Santorum shot his mouth off in the primary with what should have been enacted in the White House! To win the primary desperately trying to bribe conservatives with family values, he destroyed himself with everyone else.
He could have run on the damned issues and tried to win in the trenches on JOBS and then governed with his values as a president.
You didn’t see Obama, or any other seasoned pol with an agenda, revealing his true colors in the primary did you?
Obama didn’t blab his every intent, or emote his Marxist agenda anywhere near to the reach Rick has blabbed and emoted his treatise on contraception.
We knew this was coming, for crying out loud.
Besides, what ground did Santorum ever break for family values when he could have, back when he was in office. How big a deal was it really, back then. Not much.
Yeah, shame on Santorum for saying what he actually thinks. What kind of imbecile would try to defend God, marriage, the working class of this country and the Constitution.
He brought it all on himself for sure.
” What kind of imbecile would try to defend God, marriage, the working class of this country and the Constitution. “
You said it. Only an imbecile would throw the battle by revealing his location.
Don’t pull that crap with me. You missed the part wherein Apostle Paul warns, “be wiley as a serpent, gentle as a lamb”???? And, “I am all things to all men....”
TRANSLATION: Don’t call in fighter planes when YOU know you are the target.
Jan. 31. Who could he have been speaking of? It’s that colossal arrogance folks dislike.
And when exactly should Santorum "tip his hand" that he's a Christian who believes in family values, honest work, and freedom of religion. Guarantee the fighter planes would be carpet bombing by the time Obama got done with him.
Or maybe the message is to never bring it up. To deny your faith in order to appease the left. Well, count me out.
” And when exactly should Santorum “tip his hand” that he’s a Christian who believes in family values, honest work, and freedom of religion.”
Look, it was foolish for Rick to get into the minutiae of contraceptive practices at every stump and in the debate, and expect to get a crown and a pass.
He could have taken the road every other experienced pol would take who would have spotted instantly such a glaring trap set before them.
He could have hammered home the governmental assault on the Freedom of Religion in America, and said his personal religious views were his own. He could have slammed the home run Newt executed instead, and turned the question trap on Obama never hearing a question on his after birth infanticide vote in Illinois.
Heck no. Rick makes the minutiae of contraception the centerpiece of his campaign, for days.
Women voters have reportedly already been in Romney’s camp for some time. Why antagonize women voters, few who are even aware of Humana Vitae, probably can’t spell it, nor share the opinion that preventing pregnancy is actually abortive and not preventive of conception at all.
The “right time”, in a Godless society, would be after attaining elective office, not BEFORE getting there.
Oh, Rick *was* in elective office. How did that work out for family values? Not much.
Sorry to be cranky.
Mittens has a problem with me and all conservative women.
Love being a Conservative woman too, VG. But honestly sometimes when I look at the majority of the “women” I know..I’m embarrassed of the gender.
Oh, please, Steve. You already do talk about Gingrich that way. Not only the Santorum supporters in the forum -- but also YOU personally.
Only in response. We try not to hijack threads, because it’s not all about Rick or Newt.
Perhaps you should do a little more research, look at the posting to which I was responding.
Mariner, look at the numbers. Let’s be real about this so we can beat romney and then we can let Newt shred Rick.
Perhaps you should take responsibility for your actions.
I disagree. There are concentrations of Reagan Republicans in all of those states and they can smell a limp wrister a mile away, and that hurts Romney. Romney will certainly do well in Maryland, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, Illinois, New York, probably California...all states that the GOP will never carry. The best way to depress GOP turnout is to nominate a half-asser.
No problem, we're all on the cranky side lately. It's against our nature to be led through the gate with the rest of the sheeple That's a good thing.
I've been on the angry side lately as well due to the Ruling Class asserting their control but now's not the time to give up. This is still America and even though the elite hate it, the people are still in charge.
Thank you for your gracious reply.
