Of course this person is mentally deranged....but, i don't think the writer is correct in this assumption:
"How can someone other than the mentally deranged think that the life of an animal is more sacred than that of a human?"

Because the deranged person is not trying to 'save any animal' by killing someone who's already wearing the dead animal. I believe the deranged person wants the fur wearing person dead because he believes the fur wearing person cares nothing about the senseless suffering and/or killing of an animal to provide that coat and considers them a heartless cruel person.
