Are You Preparing for Nothing?
Prepping 101 ^ | 2/21/12

What happens if we do all these preparations and nothing goes wrong?

I am made fun of sometimes for being prepared. Mostly people will say “Are you one of those survival types?” NO. Number one I don’t like the word survivalist, I like being prepared. There are no tin foil hatters involved with preparedness. It sounds more prudent. If nothing goes wrong then I am ahead is how I see it.

When you prepare you are ready for what may eventually happen. Why do you carry a spare tire in your car? Because the zombies might eat one and then you will have another? NO. You carry a spare tire because things happen. We can’t control everything, but we can prepare for eventuality. You see being prepared is not something new.

...then you have some extra ammo to play with at the range and food to eat. No loss.

I’m prepared for nothingness. Tales of eternal life seem to be seriously lacking in detail.

What are you preparing for, 72 virgins, or 72 raisins?

It’s just a type of insurance, isn’t it?

Some of those thoughtless people in New Orleans could have used a little of it when Katrina came through.

Many people in the northeast were without electric for up to two weeks last November. Cash purchases only and no ATM’s. No electric to run heaters, well pumps or lights.

Adversity comes in many forms.

I anticipate that the Rapture will take me before I have to use very much of my preps. I only hope and pray that a Tribulation Saint will find them and put them to good use.

Now THERE'S a thought...and here's another to add to your prepping "stuff"...Bibles. Perhaps, with certain passages highlighted.

Lots. Of. Bibles.

Seriously...

Most preparation is a waste of time. Saving is a waste of money. They are only any good for SHORT TERM disasters. Two weeks of food? Then what? Six months of cash? Then what? In a real disaster, what good will money be anyway? You’d be better off with the food.

The food, the money, the water, gas for your generator, will all run out fairly quickly. Unless you are going to store food & water for at least a year, and the guns and ammo you'll need to keep it, you are wasting the effort.

Get out of the cities. You can't survive there. I can get water from my well, firewood in my yard and beyond, shoot a deer or an intruder whenever I want to.

I don't need the government for anything. I don't need electricity to survive.

All that said, I don't expect anything that bad to happen, so I'm not worried nor am I preparing. Preppers are fools.

I’m aiming more toward homesteading than prepping, although there is a lot of overlap. There’s just a part of my brain that won’t rest easy with anything less than self-sufficiency.

No doomsday scenarios needed for me.

I will tell you my friend who just passed away, @ 101, thought there was some waste to to the preps her husband made every 10 years. She wondered on one hand how it appeared to be waste preparing for a disaster that never occurred answer thinkin “what if if it did happen?”.

She was a Mormon and asked me what I thought.

I told her it was better to be prepared and comfortable than not.

Thwarting reality is that regional disasters happen all the time and I can’t recall all the time being prepared came in handy.

Don’t think water safe to drink will ever be an immediate problem? I think you are crazy.

Don’t think medical issues won’t arise which require immediate care and immediately? you are a victim and maybe dead.

Shelter outside your home will never be problem? You are just plain dumb and maybe not worth my help.

Those things happen all the time. it’s stoopid to to think they never will.

The cost for being prepared costs nothing compared to being a toe tag.

Good job, girl, good job.

Years ago the kids and I made a time capsule and hid it in the house...included in it....a Bible.

We prayed that the person who found it, well, that the Lord would use it for His good!

Preppers are fools.

That's a rather foolish generalization. First, short term disasters are more likely than TEOTWAWKI. It's foolish to be prepared for one? Buying extra of the stuff I use all the time until I have months or more supplies on hand is common sense. If nothing happens, I use it and buy more. Having the means of self-defense is common sense. So are basic first aid, alternate water supplies, heat, etc. IMHO there is at least a likely a slow descent into more poverty, higher crime, slower police response, and intermittent disruption of services as a general collapse. Basic prepping can help people get by until we the people can reestablish some order and prosperity.

That's not to say there isn't plenty of foolishness among some preppers. First there's the "space capsule survivalist" types, who plan on hiding in a bunker with a years supply of MREs and a thousand pounds of wheat. Then they will do what? Come out expecting to be welcomed by a world that has somehow been rebuilt by someone else? Then there's people who are fixated on one particular doomsday event like coronal mass ejection or polar shift, convinced that it will happen next year or something. These folks either have no understanding of statistics, or are simply nuts. They have far more chance of being killed while driving to buy their survival stuff than they ever will from what they prep for. Still, their preparations may be useful for a wide variety of other emergencies, and some are quite ingenuous.
