In or Out? Perry Counts on Strong S.C. Vote to Stay in Race [Santorum: I can win if they drop out]
Wall Street Journal - Washington Wire ^ | January 15, 2012 | Danny Yadron and Brody Mullins

Posted on 01/15/2012 12:05:27 PM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

...“We’ll make that decision on Saturday,” [Perry] said on ABC’s This Week. “It’s our intention to win SouthCarolina and go forward from there. But to try to plan out your campaign months in advance, I think is a little bit of a stretch.” The governor, who trailed in the Iowa caucuses and in the NewHampshire primary, said Sunday that his service in the AirForce will play well with the Palmetto State’s large veterans population. He has also tried to gain votes by attacking front-runner MittRomney as a “vulture” capitalist, a phrase that conservative commentators say sounds like an attack on free enterprise. Mr.Perry said he disagrees.

“This is not something we knew wasn’t coming up,” he said. “It’s better to be talking about it here in January in SouthCarolina than it is in October.”

Also on Sunday morning, RickSantorum sought to build on some recent momentum, including new support from conservative Christian groups, saying he will beat Mr. Romney for the Republican nomination once all the other candidates drop out. Speaking on Fox News Sunday and CBS’s FacetheNation, Mr.Santorum said that he won’t drop out after SouthCarolina and said that race is all about whittling down the field to just him and Mr. Romney.

In a contest with just Mr. Romney, “I’d win,” Mr. Santorum said on Fox..

Mr.Santorum declined to ask his chief rivals for the conservative vote to drop out of the race. But he said that he is better qualified and more conservative than both former Speaker Newt Gingrich and Mr. Perry. Mr. Santorum took aim at Mr. Gingrich, who is beating him in many polls. On both shows, Mr. Santorum noted that when Mr. Gingrich was speaker of the House, he faced a coup by rank-and-file Republicans who did not think that Mr.Gingrich was conservative enough....

He went on to say the Washington elites want to settle on Romney to avoid a protracted primary.

Does he not see the irony; that he’s saying this today because a group in Texas “conservatives” settled on him to avoid a protracted primary?

For some reason Perry, a competent governor, could not connect with the voters. There should be an extensive post mortem as to why the various conservative candidates could not win or seriously challenge Romney. Is it merely a money matter?

The really big question is, why are they not first asking for Ron Paul to drop out?!

For some reason Perry, a competent governor, could not connect with the voters. ...

Most of the problem has been the establishment GOP sitting on their hands. The Bush-Rove machine is doing pay-back for Perry not playing party politics and vacating the Texas gov. chair for Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, as he was supposed to.

Not remembering your talking point does not help. I like the man, but he is ripe for ridicule. I also believe that the independents do not want another Texan.

Ain’t it the truth. There is a Republican establishment in Texas and they did work hard to take out a conservative governor.

Persuaded poor Kaye Bailey to take a run at him... they were sure that would do the trick.

Well, he is still governor and Kaye will be out of politics next year.

“Santorum and Gingrich agree that Perry should drop out”

Who cares?

Newt wrote quite a lengthy and glowing foreword to Perry’s book, Fed Up. I think it’s time for Newt to drop out and endorse Perry. :)

“Mr.Santorum declined to ask his chief rivals for the conservative vote to drop out of the race. But he said that he is better qualified and more conservative than both”

What???? Forget “more” qualified. Qualified??? Wake me when this is over. How can I say this so I sound sweet and nice? Uh...when you had your biggest chance, Mr. Santorum, you chose not to endorse a Conservative against Arlen Specter. You didn’t win your own seat back, Mr. Santorum. I know Rush, Hannity and Levin are giving you a pass on those issues but since nobody else gets a pass on anything (except Romney)I thought I would just mention it. But I really like the sweater vests. :)

The Santorum bandwagon is missing a few wheels. People will make a mistake if they jump on it.

There’s a better religious conservative in the race. Santorum is not an attractive candidate and has flaws that are gradually coming out.

Ugh. Negative on the sweater vest. He’s not running to replace Mr. Rogers or for a post at a university.

He needs to put on a suit and that would at least hide some body parts that I won’t mention.

.
Santorum’s flaw is the same as Newt’s: Always been a rubberstamp for the GOP establishment.
